Phew. Wow. I never should’ve tried doing an update without fixing the performance issues.

I’ve disabled everything CPU intensive on the web server now, and put the downloads on an Amazon Cloud thingie. Since I’ve disabled payments as well, this means that Minecraft will be free to play until this all gets sorted.

For more information, go to http://www.minecraft.net/

 This is a temporary page.
Minecraft got way too popular for this humble server. I've had to disable everything fancy to even get it to run.

If your launcher is giving you download errors, please update the launcher by downloading the latest version from this page.

The following things do not work at the moment:

  • Registering an account
  • Purchasing the game
  • User verification for online servers
The following does work:
  • Actually playing the game
  • Player skins
Until this all gets sorted out, I'm officially calling a "free-to-play weekend", or however long this will take to fix. You will need to have a paid account to play it later on when this gets fixed though.
If you want to keep track of the latest developments, please follow my blog. I also post stuff on my twitter, but there's a lot of nonsense there as well.

Head over to minecraft.net and grab yourself the right version for your OS, or use one of the links below. Then pay him $13 USD on Monday for a premium account if you liked it.

Download Minecraft.exe, place it anywhere you want, then run it.
If that version doesn't work for some reason, try this: Minecraft.exe

Mac OSX:

Download Minecraft.zip, extract the Minecraft app, then run it.

Linux / Other:

Download Minecraft.jar, an executable jar file. It might work as-is.
If you run into out of memory errors, try launching it with
Also, please make sure you're running the Sun JVM...

Been playing this for the past two days. I think I may have to buy it.
Here's the unofficial GB server:  grady.boldlygoingnowhere.org
A QL of this would be interesting to see on GB.
Dave or Vinny would probably be the only ones interested though.

Didn't catch this post when it was first made but there's a topic about this here.
