    Mode 7

    Concept »

A simple texture mapping graphics mode on the SNES that allows a background layer to be rotated and scaled. Many game developers used this to create faux-3D worlds and environments.

    Anyone miss Mode 7?

Sure Mode 7 can be described as Pseudo-3D, but it still had a distinct charm despite it's limitations.

If you don't remember what Mode 7 was, games like F-Zero, the original Pilotwings, Starfox, Super Star Wars, Super Castlevania IV, & Super Mario Kart for the SNES had it in order to create a more advanced 2D plane, giving the illusion of 3D. This was done by rotations instead of pixels.

However, these games have managed to stand the test of time or atleast IMO.

What do you think, should we go back to Mode 7?

Mode 7 was neat, it had a charm back then that still holds up today.  Why would we go back to it though, there's no need for it anymore...?

I can't explain it haha, maybe it's nostalgia, but I don't think so. There is just something about it

I'd be curious to see how it would look using today's technology, perhaps for a small XBLA/PSN game.

There's this saying that I often employ, and it seems apt in this case: "You can't go home again."

Mode 7 is the only form of early 3D that I feels holds up at all. Anything else before the 6th console generation looks like a pointy mess.

As for going back to it, outside of maybe some small downloadable games though, no. No reason to, far too limiting.

Apogee made a game called Hocus Pocus that I used to play all the time. I thought the Graphics were amazing at the time. Before I had a n64/snes.

I think Kirby Mass Attack used Mode 7, unless it just used some other method of scaling sprites.

Eh, I don't know. If you haven't played them recently, F-Zero and Mario Kart might not hold up as well as you think they do. I think it's a little bit crazy to say that the Mode 7 3-D holds up better than stuff from the Playstation/Saturn era (okay, maybe it holds up better than the Jaguar...). At least on those games you can, you know, actually move in a straight line. Not to say that it wasn't still extremely cool at the time.

Also remember how every game had it's "Look at us we're using mode 7!" moment? Also remember how so often that moment was just the title screen?

Mode 7 was cool, but you haven't seen anything until you seen Mode 8.

I hate to agree with you, but yeah... This. Also, you're were wrong that time when we were talking about Yu-Gi-Oh, because you need to tribute 3 monsters to summon The Winged Dragon Of Rah and you haven't done that.

Yeah I was just thinking modern graphics mode 7 style would be sweet, but I'm wondering if there are any examples of mode 7 or something like it from something strong with 2d, like the Saturn? I'd like to see what could be done with a bigger palette if nothing else.
