Will Modern Warfare 2 continue to be the biggest entertainment launch?
" With all the talk of controversy, the airport scene, PC gamer petitions requesting IW to reconsider IWNet, public service announcements offending people, will Activision continue to be right in saying that Modern Warfare will be the biggest entertainment launch of all time? "Considering that controversy = free publicity, yes.
Airport scene = politically correct people who don't understand video games are the only ones who care. Nothing lost.
PC petition = Most PC gamers who originally planned on getting it will still buy it. Diehard players are not the majority here. Slight loss.
Public Service Announcement = Refer to airport scene.
Why since COD3 and not COD2, may I ask?" Change "of all time" to "to date," and A will be the right choice. The controversy will only help MW2, as any type of coverage is good coverage. The PC players getting peeved is only a minor loss. Call of Duty has been a console series since CoD3. "
And yeah, MW2 will sell big. But its not going to be the biggest entertainment launch of all time. That record keeps getting knocked down every year or so (Halo 3 in 2007 and GTA IV in 2008). MW2 might knock GTA IV's position but it certainly won't hold onto it forever.
I never thought it would be the biggest in the first place. It will likely be the best selling game of the year, but I just don't think it's going to be as big as everyone's expecting. I'd say 1-1.5 million first day sales, 13 million lifetime.
Have to admit I've been very unexcited about Modern Warfare 2, and that's saying something because I have always seen the Call of Duty franchise as one of my personal favourite. I'm worried it will suffer the Halo disease and make IW act all big and overconfident. Nothing I've seen of the game as truly excited me, I will of course be buying it as I'm a fan of the franchise but no where near is it the ultimate game this year for me personally.
That right went to Uncharted 2 and goes to Assassins Creed 2. I am slightly worried IW take it a little to far to impress folks, rather see them play it safe.
" I am slightly worried IW take it a little to far to impress folks, rather see them play it safe. "It's totally possible that could happen actually. They could end up overcooking everything that people liked about CoD4 and end up with an inferior product. I think they'd argue that they're in a great position.
Either way, this breaks the year's best sales figures within the first 24 hours. I reckon it'll probably beat GTA IV too aswell - mainly because the install base for PS3/360 is now bigger than it was when GTA launched.
"Why since COD3 and not COD2, may I ask?"CoD2 on the PC is arguably the best version of the game, it's still kept alive by the mod community and according to Xfire, it's still one of the most played games next to CoD4 and WoW (among Xfire users).
I think it will be the biggest entertainment launch of 2009, and maybe even for another year or two after that. But I have never understood how any form of entertainment can possible be the biggest launch of all time, since that would imply that nothing will ever surpass it, which is simply an impossible achievement.
Now, if you were to say that it's going to be the biggest entertainment far thus far, then most definitely. But to be completely honest, I'm kind of hoping it will be a flop.
I dont care much about it but im sure its going to sell
Hey willy why did GS ban you? i miss your threads :(
" B. I have a hard time believing it whenever people claim that something will be the biggest of all time. "It probably won't do so well as it should be since there's that whole dedicated servers debacle as well. I'll say it'll be the biggest of this year but definitely not the biggest of all time. That's just ridiculous. I for one, didn't even realise it was coming out so soon but on the other hand I don't really care for it that much. B.
It will be hard, but if any game can break Grand Theft Auto IV's records, it is Modern Warfare 2. It's definitely going to be the biggest release of the year, that's for sure.
Is Halo 3 the biggest launch of all time right now? I forget. COD4 and W@W have more legs than first day sales. It'll sell a few million week 1, but the real strength will come from the 10 million+ it sells over the next year of time.
Biggest of this year, I voted. The losses are completely insignificant and like others say, the controversy will only drive sales.
" There's a Modern Warfare 2 coming out this year? I kid, but it's definitely not even close to my most hyped list, let alone buy list. It doesn't seem at all a good jump from it's predecessor to worth upgrading. "If you're implying that there isn't much of a change in the formula, gameplay or features in the game, then I beg to question you what you would say about 90% of other sequels.

Unless there is a very noticeable new feature up front that it's predecessor did not have, I wait for reviews.
