The "Monkey Island" franchise features a series of adventure games following the exploits of the clumsy yet lovable Guybrush Threepwood in his quest to become the most legendary pirate in the Caribbean. During his journeys he must defeat the evil zombie pirate LeChuck, and try to marry his true love, Elaine Marley.
Secret of Monkey Island
The first game in the series was released in 1990. The game sees Guybrush starting his quest to become a pirate as he tries to prove that he is capable of such a title. On the way he meets Elaine Marley and falls in love with her. Little does he know that the ghost pirate LeChuck is also has his eyes on her. After Elaine is kidnapped by LeChuck, Guybrush sets off to save her.
Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge
The second game in the series was released in 1991 a year after the first. Guybrush Threepwood returns in his search to find the legendary treasure known as the 'Big Whoop'. He has become a real pirate and has donned a dashing blue coat and a beard for his new position. In truw Monkey Island style Guybrush accidentally helps bring back LeChuck (now a zombie) who, of course, wants revenge. The game itself has evolved much since the original and is larger and features new islands.
The Curse of Monkey Island
The Curse of Monkey Island (released in 1997) begins with Guybrush floating on the sea in a bumper car. He ends up on an Island where he finds his arch enemy LeChuck having a battle with his love Elaine. The fight ends with LeChuck being 'killed'. Later on, Guybrush proposes to Elaine with a giant diamond ring that he discovered among LeChuck's spoils. She accepts but straight after putting on the ring she turn into a solid gold statue and Guybrush realises that the ring was cursed. Guybrush has now to starts a journey to find a way to undo the curse but he has another problem in the form of LeChuck, who has returned from the dead (again) and wants to marry Elaine himself.
Escape from Monkey Island
The final game in the series (so far) was released 10 years after the original in 2000. The game is the first in the series to have 3D graphics. Assuming his troubles would be over after marrying Elaine and thwarting LeChuck, Guybrush returns to Melee Island (of which Ealine is the governor) to find a whole host of new problems which leads him on another adventure to stop a treacherous scheme to take over the tri-island area.
Tales of Monkey Island
An episodic Monkey Island game from Telltale Games. Many of the people who worked on the first three Monkey Island games will be working on this project. It will include voice-overs from the voice cast from The Curse of Monkey Island and Escape from Monkey Island. The first episode will be released on July 7, 2009.
