Moral dilemmas presented to the player that often have significant effect on the story or other characters.
The concept of moral decisions in gaming has been around since the very beginning. While the first games offered no stories, when those games came along that brought a tale morality would always play a key role. What began to really differentiate gaming from movies or books was the player's ability to make decisions on their own, and to play through the game, no matter how scripted, "their way". As would be obvious this mindset spread to the actual morality of the characters the games would follow, and a major selling point in many games become the ability to choose a character's morality. At first this was very black and white. Fable provides an excellent example of allowing the player to choose either the good path or the evil path, but there is very little room in between and each option is very clean cut. Since then games have begun trying to make the line between good and evil a bit more ambiguous, with games like KOTOR and Mass Effect offering many options, still they tend to be very clean cut in the end. Grand Theft Auto 4 has recently stirred up the morality concept bringing in some tough decisions that the player cannot truly predict the outcome too. It forces the player to chose the lesser of two evils in a few situations, which is not quite as neat as fable's good vs bad. Other games have brought the concept of morality in as simple a story piece, having the player follow the morality decisions of a scripted character which bring in a more "movie" feel to the games, but makes the ending seem a bit richer, rather that one of a few endings. Overall morality in games has been used in many creative ways, however the battle between player choice and scripted decisions still rages on.Moral Decisions games
