More Mortal Kombat HD Remake Retailer Listings Surface

It hasn't been officially announced, but that certainly won't stop these guys from letting you pay them for it.
It's popped up a couple of times now in Europe, but now GameStop's making it domestic. Leading Mortal Kombat fan site, TRMK, noticed a retailer listing for something called "Mortal Kombat: HD Arcade Kollection" as an M-rated PS3 disc with a retail price of $39.99 coming from Warner Bros. on November 16.

The rumor has been floating around for awhile now, with TRMK also digging up a similar listing in a US-focused distributor database earlier this month. Most of the speculation and unofficial info seems to peg the package as a collection containing remakes of Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.

Much like the rest of the project, it's not known how, exactly, one would make these 2D games over in high-resolution. Much of the original footage shot for those first three games isn't in a suitable quality for anything more than some basic upscaling. Going back to TRMK yet again, the site is also reporting that the footage is being reshot with new actors. The whole idea sounds crazy in a way I can totally get behind. In fact, if they need someone to play Stryker, I think I've got the "out-of-shape cop" look down to a science. Just putting that out there. I'll send my headshot over, cool?

Also of interest is the fact that all of these retailer and distributor leaks have only listed the PlayStation 3, never the Xbox 360. This could point to some sort of exclusive deal... maybe since Sony's so keen on getting 3D support into the proper Mortal Kombat sequel due out next year, it's also throwing some additional oomph (and by "oomph" I suppose I mean "dollars") in Warner's direction for some exclusive arcade classics?

Either way, the retailer listings and specific information about this rumored project have picked up enough that it certainly sounds legit. And GameStop isn't exactly in the business of inventing products to include in its database. From a business perspective, maybe this makes great sense as a way to get people re-excited about the next MK by showing them how it all began?

But if this game's really going to come together and ship in mid-November, it's a little surprising that it hasn't been announced yet. That's really the only part that bothers me about this whole thing. Either some secret team has been toiling away on getting emulated arcade code to play nice with new graphics for quite some time, or this thing's going to be some sort of rush-job. Or, heck, maybe it doesn't actually exist, right?

make it 30 and its a deal

#5 Posted by KamikazeCaterpillar (1179 posts) -

I think $40 is a reasonable price.

#6 Posted by Spiritof (2017 posts) -

Shouldn't it be "Mortal Kombat: HD ArKade KolleKtion"?

#7 Posted by Jeff (3400 posts) -

Considering these sorts of HD remakes would probably go for $15 each if they were downloadable, $40's pretty reasonable.

Reshooting the footage sounds crazy, yet amazing. Hopefuly there's a 360 version in the near future. Personally, I would not mind if they did it with realistic 3D models (not as cartoony as the ones in the 3D games)

Oh, GOD, YES!!
Will definitely pick this up on PS3.

Dr Tracksuit as a secret character?

#11 Posted by animateria (3252 posts) -

I'll decide when I see it.

I mean how exactly are they going to HDfy it?

New actors isn't really what I want. But I guess they can't get the old guys since they are, well, OLD.

From the character select screen hit down, back, down, forward, block+ punch.  This unlocks Dr. Tracksuit and the Toobin' mini game in UMK3 HD.

Sounds awesome and fishy at the same time in equal amounts.

You are very welcome Jeff! :)

I'm really hoping any HD MK remake will look better than Dark Presence (what ever happened to that game?).

#20 Posted by DukesT3 (1888 posts) -

$40 for three MK games. I could get down with that.

#21 Posted by Nunchuckles (195 posts) -

I mean if they're remaking it with new actors, HD, and new code and stuff.  40 bucks is more than reasonable, since these games on their own would go for at least 10 dollars a piece.

I'm in.       :)

Instead of 3D-support, throw in some shadow-support and I'm game.

More than happy to drop 40 dollars on MK. I don't have any MK to play right now :( My Genesis cart for MK2 is basically broken and I don't have MK2 downloaded on to my ps3 at this time.

Will be kinda sad to see all the cast that done by...Pesina? played by someone else though. I have a feeling it will never be the same.

It's kinda like seeing Hayden Christensen at the end of Return of the Jedi.

@blah37:

IIRC it was never actually a game. Just a joke.
#31 Posted by sodiumCyclops (2644 posts) -

$40 sounds like a lot.

Unless of course, they are all properly remade and such then maybe...

#32 Posted by Tredik (71 posts) -

If it doesn't have a re-shot Dan Forden cut-out, this kollection can suck it.

#33 Posted by Atik (5 posts) -

Too bad Mortal Kombat Trilogy is not included. I think I could pay $20 only for "Mortal Kombat Trilogy HD Remake"  with brand new high quality graphic assets Monkey Island style, new network code and maybe achievements if it's not too much to ask :D

Jeff Gerstmann as Stryker would be a dream come true. In fact, it might make me finally like that guy. You gotta shout out this idea to Ed Boon, man.

#35 Posted by AcidCrashX (22 posts) -

Yup lets make this happen.

#36 Posted by Foggen (833 posts) -

I wonder if the "Arcade Kollection" should technically include MK4...

PS3 only?
Hrmm..

Indeed. I am equal parts sceptical and excited. An odd combination...
#39 Posted by yates (378 posts) -

I have my suspicions that they're not remakes at all and they're just repackaging 1, 2 and 3.

#40 Edited by Lazyaza (2165 posts) -

I wonder if they'll use animations comprised of full-frame footage (like films do with actors on green screen) or go completely old school and take a bunch of still photos and merge them together in a series of frames.  Either way I cant wait to see this game in action.

Just like when that "new movie" teaser came out, I'm not believing anything until someone from WB declares it official or Boon himself tweets about it. I really love MK though, so I hope this is true.

The idea of new actors makes me a little sad...
