I've been waiting for Jeff to post something on this. Having just watched the first Mortal Kombat movie yesterday, im a bit skeptical. And no matter how serious the movie looks, whenever they say "fatality" it just makes me laugh.
What the hell? Are they actually trying to explain the supernatural powers and shit that the fighters do? It's kinda weird having it set in a real world setting.
This looks like a bad joke... Baraka is some doctor that modified his own body? fuck no!
And that fight scene is lame as shit... that movie is gonna blow big time. They had the right idea with the first Mortal Kombat movie, this movie is what they usually do with video game adaptations.
@Swaboo: We don't even know if it's a movie yet. If it was a movie, I doubt they'd release a 7 minute trailer, that's way too long for something we see for the first time.

how can people STILL think this is fan made when there are at least TWO known hollywood actors in it (Jeri Ryan and Michael J White), there is a MK game coming to E3, and Ed Boon has said many times "you wanted a mature MK, youll get a mature MK" after Mk vs DC. Common sense isnt that hard people :(
Definitely not fan made, considering that several of the actors are moderatly famous. And almost certainly for the new game, rather than a movie as some people seem to think.
Shame this was leaked, as it would have been a very impressive announcement at E3, but it was pretty amazing, and a very interesting update to a rather stale series. Hopefully the gameplay has had the same treatment as the characters. I thought he was talking to Kano for the whole thing, until they showed the wire.. Very, very cool :)

Ugh trying to take a real approach to MK... I weep for the former MK mythos. All those realms and fighters were awesome! Might as well change the name to Street Fighter or Tekken.
As a former MK fan, this makes me excited. It is nice to see some new direction taken in the franchise. I would hope that this is a trailer for an upcoming game and they'll continue to release videos alongside the game (a la Alan Wake) because I hope how the multi-faceted approach works for viewers. If this turns out to be nothing more than a glorified fan film then it is a great effort and the team deserves more work. A little sad that Johnny Cage had to go but seriously, he's like the Kenny of MK nowadays...
by the way, FEAR 3 has live action trailers for a game (also a Warner Bros. game, like MK) and so did Alan Wake. Hell Wake had a mini series. I'm 99.99999999999999999999% certain this is for MK9 (or whatever they end up calling it) and not for a movie

@Jeust: But the mythos had gotten/was always really silly and stale. The games needed to be taken as far away as possible from what they started as, you can't hope to keep something like that fresh for that amount of time.
I really liked the look of this obviously not fan made thing. I think it's a good direction for the series and has gotten me interested in MK which I thought would never happen again. I look forward to more information or more (please?) of these crazy ass videos.

Yeah, I also agree. At least thats what I hope. This style would be quite interesting for a game although I would not want to watch a movie of this.
I just wish they would focus more on the gameplay because the last couple of MK games were rushed piles of shit (although I will admit I have a small guilty pleasure for Armageddon despite it being a terrible fighting game).

You definitely have a valid point, I'll try to keep an open mind until I see more. No matter what, though, more fatalities is always a good thing.
I hope this is for a movie, and not just a game (I'd be ok with both though) as I have zero interest in playing a new Mortal Kombat game, but a movie of that style is so different and interesting that I'd spend $12 and 2 hours on it in a heartbeat.
