One of the goriest fighting game franchises returns to its roots, introducing a new story that re-tells the events of the first three Mortal Kombat games (with a unique twist).
Retailer Exclusive Fatalities
I honestly thought this was a joke at first, but it looks like the new MK comes with fatalities as preorder bonuses from certain stores. With a console exclusive character, dlc characters, and now exclusive fatalities... this game is looking like a mess.
You could just spend $180 on all preorders and get all the fatalities. Better not tell Kotick this idea.
Okay, I can understand weapons and costumes for certain games, but a fatality being limited to specific stores is extremely disheartening. This is not the direction MK needs to be going.
Me too, in fact Jeff has already posted the following on his Twitter: "Retailer-exclusive fatalities? Come on Mortal Kombat, don't fuck this up". Indeed this is not good news for those buying Mortal Kombat." Can't wait to hear Jeff's Rant on the Bombcast "
Yeah I just saw Jeff tweet about this earlier on. I generally don't like retailer-exclusive pre-orders but this just seems outright weird to me. Really hope they get rid of this plan.
" Fuck that shit, but at least it wont happen in the UK. "Was just going to post this. These exclusives are bad enough, but we likely won't get anything in Europe.
So we'll basically have DLC that should have been in the game as standard and silly guest character(s?) that don't belong in the game.
My hype for the game is rapidly fading.
I know Fatalities arn't apart of the core gameplay since they're only done after the match is over, but I still think this is a bad idea. Though I can see them selling these fatalities in the future as DLC or something.
It depends. If the gamestop fatality is one where the character is dressed into a gamestop uniform and then stab him to death with strategy guides and game informer mags, I could get behind that.
That's fucking stupid. These are one of those Ideas that you want to wack someone in the back of the head for just even thinking that.
I hate preorder bonuses but I assume this will be DLC down the line. This game already has the standard 2 fatalities per character so it doesn't feel like they're withholding content you expect to sell as DLC.
But the fatalities they've chosen bug me. In a game that's all about old school to have the classic spine rip and toasty be DLC is super lame.
" The bigger story here is that there will be premium DLC Fatalities.yeah its basically the same thing.
Think about it. "
this is ridiculous though.
midway is being fucking stupid. you have to make sure your game is going to be a hit before you get cocky like this
From what I understand the fatalities are not integral or originally a part of the game but are merely 'classic' fatalities.

" What if the retailer exclusive fatalities are say dropping a gamestop onto the enemy? …"Now that is a retailer specific bonus I could get behind. The Walmart smiley face rolling over someone, squeezing the opponents guts out :D
The lame part is that if you are fighting someone over xboxlive etc. your opponent may not have access to taht fatality but they will still see it, meaning all fatalities are on every disc regardless of where you purchased your game. Stuff like this ruins games for me, not because it makes the games bad, but because the marketing behind it feels crass and cheap.
I'm on the fence of wanting this game to begin with. I'm also not going to be screaming for a boycott.
That being said, this does give me an uncomfortable rub.
" I know Fatalities arn't apart of the core gameplay since they're only done after the match is over, but I still think this is a bad idea. Though I can see them selling these fatalities in the future as DLC or something. "This. But it is still pretty dumb to make any kind of MK fatalities retailer-exclusive in the first place. God help us all if Activision and Kotick start doing this on their games.
" @extremeradical said:I would not pay for a babality. Ever. I hated those things." @MB said:We live in a world where we could be buying Babalitys. "" The bigger story here is that there will be premium DLC Fatalities.Oh God, I thought about it. "
Think about it. "
" Remember. This is not the retailers fault. Its the devs for even commin up with this shit. "I'm pretty sure that the publishers and the retailers have a business agreement, and that it's the job of the developers to churn out some kind of exclusive content to satisfy that agreement.
" What if the retailer exclusive fatalities are say dropping a gamestop onto the enemy? There probably just reskins of fatalities already in the game that involve the retailer somehow "From what I gather those are classic Mortal Kombat fatalities from Sub Zero, Scorpion and Reptile... and the article is pretty clear about that.
Ugh preorder bonuses.... I remember when pre-order bonuses were simple throwaway collectables like a t-shirt, hat, maybe a figurine. Now we're getting in-game content, and I'm really not digging exclusive content in a multi platform game. It's dumb, because I usually get conflicted about what version to buy, and just end up picking it up three years later in a 5 dollar used bin.
So you market this game being all about a return to form with tons of gore and fatalities, then you go and make some of said fatalities RETAILER EXCLUSIVE. That's fucking up 101.
" I don't mind console exclusive characters, dlc characters or even retailer exclusive alternate costumes...but retailer exclusive fatalities is fuckin' ridiculous... "

wow, who the fuck are making these decisions? People must be really fucking thick if they think this is going to be good for them in the long run
" @Pie said:Yeah well, I didn't read the article because I don't really care" What if the retailer exclusive fatalities are say dropping a gamestop onto the enemy? There probably just reskins of fatalities already in the game that involve the retailer somehow "From what I gather those are classic Mortal Kombat fatalities from Sub Zero, Scorpion and Reptile... and the article is pretty clear about that. " @guthwulf said:Yeah, that was probably the right choice then." @Pie said:Yeah well, I didn't read the article because I don't really care "" What if the retailer exclusive fatalities are say dropping a gamestop onto the enemy? If people just bend over and "deal with it" as pubishers start taking more and more emblematic things out of games to sell as separate DLC, the weight of the content they remove will continue to get bigger. So maybe you're a pushover and you don't mind them taking out signature aspects of a game to nickel and dime you, but not everyone's a bitch like that.
