    Mortal Kombat

Game » consists of 26 releases. Released Apr 19, 2011

So I was playing Mortal Kombat with the PS3 D-PAD for not even that long (30mins - 1 hour if even that) and now my thumb is starting to form a blister type mark. It's not there yet but It looks like it's forming. Have games ever hurt you, even if its something really small?

    Thanks.

You serious?  MK9 doesn't even need the same smooth movements that MvC3 and SSFIV needs...it's just buttons by theme selves.

You playing wrong, young Keyblade master.

    Use spit.
It helps reduce friction until your skin hardens.

ha. you know nothing of video game injuries. try growing up in the 80's with things like the dreaded joystick waggle.
and try playing an hour of MK2 or SF2 on the good old snes joypad. that thing was rough

Playing with the old dreamcast analog stick, with the ridges tore up my thumb. Even with those, thumb slips were the most frustrating thing while doing graffitti in Jet Grind Radio...

@NekuSakuraba: my thumbs haven't hurt since I played SF2 on the SNES....You get some serious D-Pad thumb burn from the SNES controller...but it was 100% worth it!
and I thought there were no quarter turns / half turns etc in MK? cause thats where all the pain comes from!

Use the analogue stick, it's quite responsive even if you miss an input it kinda does it anyway.

I actually had the same problem with this game after first day of getting it. My thumb was sore a few days after :-)

Apparently I've either toughened up or improved my technique, because I don't have the problem now.

The NES dpad used to kill my left thumb after long sessions.

I'll admit though my left thumb hurt a bit after beating the campaign in MK in two sittings. I felt fine in a hour though.

Nah, I used to play with the thumbstick or 360 d-pad, which are both pretty smooth. Now I play with a fightstick and that's even smoother.

I've been finding the D-pad on that Silver 360 controller Microsoft released last year feels pretty good. No Street Fighter thumb as of yet.

@MEATBALL: I'm with you. The transforming D-pad on the silver 360 controller is awesome. Granted, mine spends 90% of its time in the "plus" mode and nearly no time in the "disc" mode, but it's nice having the option, and both options work very well.

That said, the best solution to Street Fighter thumb is an arcade stick.

You just gotta stay loose. If you're already blistering then you're getting way too intense and mashing your thumb into the D-Pad. Pressing it harder does not make you better. I have the same problem when I've been playing for a really long time and start getting mentally fatigued. I forget to relax and end up with sore fingers and thumbs.

I had that problem, but just barely, and it had to do with the fact that I played it over 10 hours straight in one sitting.

Regarding the Test Your Might, this is an old trick dating back to the first Mortal Kombat game for home systems.  Just make a fist and use the 2nd joint part of your hand (not your knuckles) to rapidly rub across the buttons.  It works like a charm and does not hurt nearly as much as the old days.

After playing SSFIV pretty much non-stop for a fortnight after its release, my left thumb was a disaster. Too much mashing I suppose.

That shouldn't be happening with MK motions though.

SSFIV gave me a pretty serious right thumb blister until I bought a fightstick. Can't say if MK would've, because I bought the MK:TE, and have only ever used the stick it came with to play MK.

Yeah...I won't be doing these after doing them in Challenge Tower...the last one seriously left me numb lol

I kinda came up with my own strategy for these, I won't start until 4 seconds are left and then start mashing away, because if i start at the beginning I'll usually end up hurting and slow down and lose lol

    Totally.

Remember that free glove they offered to send people because of that? Sent out for one because I thought it was going to be some bitchin' N64 branded glove, and it ended up just being some generic brand fingerless glove. :(

I remember a half-assed Superman game on the PS2 that really required some impossible button mashing/analog rotating, my cousin's thumb was left a bloody mess, skin was ripped off and blood was just everywhere.

Seriously, MK9 isn't really rough, it just takes some getting used to.

MK9 isn't nearly as bad as the Street Fighters. My worse was when I rented Super SFII on the SNES I got hand cramps and thumb blisters.

Second worse was DOA:Xtreme Beach Volleyball where I got other cramps and blisters.
