One of the goriest fighting game franchises returns to its roots, introducing a new story that re-tells the events of the first three Mortal Kombat games (with a unique twist).

I don't buy fighting games. I bought Mortal Kombat

I have never been a big fan of fighting games.  I have played Super Street Fighter IV and Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and can respect those games as great fighters but they never appealed to me.  However, I have always had a thing for the Mortal Kombat series and even with that said I haven't played any MK games in a very long time.  I can say with full confidence though that if you have lost touch with Mortal Kombat like I have it is safe to return because this is the best game in the series.

    Story:
Yup! There is totally an actual story in this game.  No not only ladder "stories"  but an actual story with cutscenes and voice acting and it is all extremely well done.  Sure there is the occasional cheesy line and the story is ...... well a bit cheesy in its own right, but that doesn't mean it is entertaining to see the events unfold.  There are plenty of twists and turns and of course fights to go around that give the story a nice pace.  If I had to guess, I probably put around 8 hours into the story before beating it and enjoyed everything until the last fight (which will be explained more later).

As I mentioned above, there is still the ladder to do AND a 300 stage challenge tower that is not only fun but also unique and pretty tough as well!

    Gameplay:
As I mentioned above I am not the biggest fan of fighters so I don't have total knowledge of how combos are used in other games, but to me Mortal Kombat seems to handle very good.  Everyone seems to have a very different style of fighting from aggressive to defensive to ranged.  Combos are fairly easily pulled off and with some practice, you can learn to do some tremendous damage.  Also I would like to point out when you hit someone in the game, it sounds like it.  Making contact with any attack has a force behind it that makes you cringe everytime you see it (especially the X-ray moves which are the super moves you can perform).   The only sore spot I have with the game is the boss fights.  These fights force you to drop everything you have learned from playing to find out a cheap way to beat them.  I don't wanna get too much into it so I will say they are very beatable but you probably won't enjoy this as much as they could have made it.
X-ray moves can seriously damage your foe and turn the tide of battle.

    Presentation:
This game looks and sound sounds fantastic both technically and artistically.  The game runs at a very smooth 60 frames per second with very rare slowdown on the x-rays and thats about it.  Characters look great and boast their own style and take very noticeable damage throughout the fight.  When you enter the third round of a fight, it looks like both characters have gone thorough an absolute nasty fight.  Blood in Mortal Kombat looks awesome no matter if its red, blue, or green blood it all looks great.  Fatalities are back!!!! and they look better than ever, some are of course better than others but overall there is a nice variety of blood and gore to go around for each character.  However, I have to say the most brutal moves in the game are the X-ray supers. Not only are these moves fun to watch, but most of them are totally plausible!  I could witness in real life somebody snapping somebodies neck, and that really adds to the brutality.
    Ouch!!

    Online:
Unfortunately, I have not played much online due to PSN being down but from what I have played it seemed fine.  There did seem to be a bit of lag but it was a hit or miss for me.  Some games would be perfect and others would barely work, but I have confidence these problems can be fixed.
Kratos is mad he can't whoop ass online!

    Final thoughts:
Mortal Kombat is a steller fighting game that is packed with content from top to bottom. Story, ladder, challenge tower and online boast hours of content for you to play around with.  It has some annoying issues but nothing to subtract from this awesome game that I would recommend to anyone, even if you aren't the biggest fighting fan.

I would like to add this is my first review so don't be too harsh but constructive criticism is welcome =)

No worries, and your review is very good. It is interesting to read your thoughts on the game, which is why I think it would be greatly improved if there was more written content. Keep em coming though, I like your clarity and style of writing.

Your review is clearly written and conveys your thoughts nicely. Its good, but maybe you could elaborate on a few points as its a bit thin on the writing side, but a good review, keep them up!

Also if you don't like this review leave a comment telling me how to improve for the future. Thanks!   Most fighting game fans can probably remember which of the entries into the Mortal Kombat franchise is their favorite. However, as a close converse to that, many can probably also remember which one(s) are the worst. I don’t think its cliché to liken the experience of g...

Get Over Here...and play Mortal Kombat! 0

Mortal Kombat 2011 Mortal Kombat comes back strong and hard for its ninth installment titled simply Mortal Kombat. This game is somewhat of a reboot to the Mortal Kombat Franchise both in terms of story and gameplay; not only do you relive/change the events of the story for the first three Mortal Kombat games but it also returns to its 2D fighting style. The story begins after the events of Mortal Kombat Armageddon. As Shao Kahn is about to finish Raiden off, he sends a message to his past sel...
