The Early History of Mother Base

Mother Base as MSF Finds it

Mother Base was originally built by an American University with the help of a grant from the United States government somewhere in the Caribbean Sea to research ocean thermal energy conversion but the project was quickly scrapped and the platform was purchased by the KGB agent Vladamir Zadornov as an asset for cold-war operations in Central America by a front organisation.

The base later proved to be a critical asset when Zadornov attempted to convince the leaders of Militaires Sans Frontières to participate in a KGB investigation in Costa Rica; Kazuhira Miller, an MSF Lieutenant, was particularly swayed by the idea of a permanent, defensible base and lobbied to his cohort, Big Boss.

    Restoration, Utility and Function

Eventually coming to an agreement, MSF relocated to their new home. While its condition after years of neglect left something to be desired, the platform was quickly retrofitted and expanded for military applications, becoming indispensable for operations on the continent. Mother base provided a number of services from providing intelligence and covertly resupplying agents in the field to developing the weapons and equipment they utilized and providing medical care to the injured. Each of these functions was relegated to a dedicated strut funded by MSF's mercenary outsourcing services and assets recovered in the field. Eventually a more economical hexagonal design was implemented allowing for further strut development and maximizing Mother Base's capacity and efficiency of space.

Over the course of the Peace Walker Incident the base continued to expand, growing so large as to be able to accommodate a hanger that housed ground and air vehicles for use in combat deployments as well as a combined firing range and kill house to train aptitude with weaponry and to simulate combat encounters. At the behest of engineering specialist Huey Emmerich, a second hanger was built to facilitate experiments into Metal Gear design, the fruit of Which was Metal Gear ZEKE.

    "A New Kind of Business"

As the Peace Walker incident came to a close, Mother Base continued to expand, MSF growing in power and size along with it, even managing to covertly acquire a nuclear warhead to be used as a secret deterent should any world power come to see MSF as a threat. After a series of escapes from the brig, Mother Base suffered an attack from a double agent who had sabotaged the base's security and captured ZEKE when Big Boss was retrieving the prisoner . After contending with the compromised ZEKE, recapturing it and defeating the double agent, Mother Base and MSF had a period of calm with which to further their agenda but always expecting retaliation from the mysterious Cipher, who had deployed the double agent.
