Motorstorm is a brutal off-road racing experience on the PlayStation 3 brought to you by Evolution Studios.

Overview

MotorStorm is an off-road racing game from the creators of the WRC games; Evolution Studios. When announced at E3 2005, with an ambitious pre-rendered trailer, the game gained interest from throughout the industry and would become one the PlayStation 3's initial key titles. The game was released in Japan in December 2006, and in North America and Europe in March 2007.

Carnage is a way of life in MotorStorm

The game take place during the fictional MotorStorm Festival, set in Monument Valley. With a huge variety of vehicles available, spanning many different vehicle classes, MotorStorm's racing is relatively unique, with races often taking place between cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, etc.

At the time of release, MotorStorm was seen by many as a technical marvel, with mud effects, tire tracks and crashes all being processed in real time. This lead to Sony, the game's publisher, making much of the PS3's processing power being the reason the game was possible.

Vehicles

The game holds the Guinness World Record in largest variety of vehicle in a racing game. The player can choose from rally cars, big rigs, dirt bikes, ATVs, racing trucks, buggies and mudpluggers.

Big rigs; the heavyweights of MotorStorm

A key mechanic within the game is the vehicles' ability to nitrous boost. Players can use the feature as often as they want, however, doing so will increase the engine temperature. If the engine reaches a critical temperature, the vehicle will explode. This is often used as a tactic to propel the vehicle over the finish line, either to edge out a competitor or simply to appear god-damn awesome.

All vehicles could be controlled using the SIXAXIS controller's motion sensing capabilities.

Tracks

While the game takes place entirely in the one location, there are eight tracks in the game; The Grizzly, Sidewinter Gulch, Rockhopper, Rain God Mesa, The Tenderizer, Dust Devil, The Mudpool and Coyote Rage.

A track deforming

Each track is filled with jumps, ramps, cliffs, mud pits and other infuriating yet strangly beautiful obstacles. Thanks to the advanced physics in the game, the tracks will deform over time. As a race goes on tyre marks will remain in the mud, adding an extra element to the gameplay. Bigger vehicles will leave larger hol es in the track, and the smaller vehicles will find it harder to keep traction.

Every track has multiple routes, each catering for a different racing style. This links again to the different types of vehicles in the game; the smaller vehicles like bikes and ATVs are better suited to the high ground, with the large jumps and out of the way of the larger vehicles who will clog the main route.

Downloadable Content

SInce the game's release, a range of extra content has been made available for download on the PlayStation Network. So far this has included a time-trial mode, updated tracks and new vehicles. Some of these updates are free, although the new tracks and vehicles are available at a charge.
