I'm not sure what the purpose of this topic is. There is a link to list of games one of the IGN guys considers to be the best of 2008... Mount & Blade is one there, sure... But... So?
What is the big deal with Mount and Blade? I haven't tried it yet but it's recieved mediocre to poor reviews everywhere, even by most users. Surely it can't be that good?

Review averages would disagree with you. ;)
Anyway, to End_Boss, Mount&Blade is far from a mainstream title. I find it odd that Mount&Blade got such a good response on such a mainstream site. Far from typical.

Depends on who you ask. Try out the demo. It's like Pirates! with a heavy emphasis on combat. All other aspects of the game are really a thin excuse to kick some ass, so if you don't enjoy the combat, the enjoyment you'll get out of the game is limited.
Also keep in mind that the game is very modable, and mods are easy to install, manage, and develop. The engine has a lot of potential, so you might also want to check out what the community is working on.
Mount and Blade is pretty awesome. Its combat is amazing fun and the general gameplay is simple but entertaining. Then there is the fact the game is easily modable that people have made minor gameplay tweaks, full out skin mods and complete total conversion mods that make the game look and play differently. And if your a history buff there is a large number of historical recreation mods aswell as other fantasy and modern warfare mods. A great and simple indie game.
