    Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars

Game » consists of 4 releases. Released Dec 02, 2008

Mushroom Men shows gamers the mundane world from the surreal perspective of a three-inch-high Mushroom Man. Les Claypool of Primus fame provides the soundtrack and voiced all of the characters for this 3D platformer.

It saddens me that it has 10,000 sales.

This game is actually pretty damn impressive. The combat may be waggle and the game may not be incredibly polished, but the characters are cool, the design is awesome, and the music is some of the best I've heard in years on a videogame. It deserves better than 10,000 sales.

Yeah I hate it when that happens to games.
And when they are rated unfairly.

What is most sad about wii, is for every creative original game, there are five games on the shelf next to it, like Bratz: Puppy mill, or Some crappy movie based game. Do they really need Desperoux, the game?
Maybe MM will find better sales over time.

All I've heard about this game is that its art style is kinda cool, everyone seems to say the art style is different/good but the gameplay is totally mediocre.

So, how many adverts have you seen for this game? It always amazes me when devs make a new IP and just expect it to sell when they dont give it any coverage

Given that the game is fairly unpolished, I don't think they had enough money to satisfy their own vision for the game, let alone advertise. This isn't being churned out by EA or Activision. It's being churned out by Gamecock, who has considerably less money.
Also, pause, the game is actually very unique in its traditional nature. How many 3D platformers came out this year with characters that weren't licensed as movie properties, let alone had as much quality art as this one?

Unique it may be, but that wont translate into sales. You need to get the word of the game out there. Remember when No More Heroes didn't sell well, and Suda cried about people not liking its 'uniqueness'. No, its because he didnt tell anybody that it came out!

They ran ads in Game Informer (the largest and most widely read video game magazine out there by a large margin) for a while, though I guess they tapered off after a while since the game kept getting delayed. It's only a fault of the devs in that they couldn't meet their original ship date, beyond that it's the fault of the publisher for not advertising it enough.

Hopefully the Wii version tanking means that we'll get a quick and dirty PS2 port for them to help recoup their dev costs. I'd be all about playing a version of this game that doesn't contain any silly, pointless waggling. Judging by reviews, at least the game was better than Rise of the Fungi. There's a game I wish I'd never preordered based on prerelease hype.

Port it to the PS3 or Xbox 360, and I'll buy it.  I just don't play many Wii games these days, as I prefer a regular controller.

After watching that Quick Look the game looks pretty good. Reminds me of something out of Toy Story for some reason, maybe it's the environment and weapons consist of every day items.

Mushroom Men didn't sell well for three major reasons:

    1.  Poor advertising - how can a game from an independent developer honestly get sales if there is little to no advertising going out for it?
    2.  Poor shelving - I haven't seen this game ONCE at Wal-Mart, Best Buy, or even our local entertainment store Hastings...even though I see the little tag saying that copies of Mushroom Men should be there.  Why aren't there copies?  It's not because they are selling out.  It's because the shelving has been handled poorly for the game.
    3.  Super Mario Galaxy - it's a platformer, it's pretty fuckin' good, and it has a noticeable character that is known on the console.  If I'm going to spend $50 on a game, am I going to pick Mushroom Men, a game that has barely been advertised or shelved...or Super Mario Galaxy, a game that was one of the highest reviewed games when it came out, as well as features a character that I recognize?

So boom.  That's why Mushroom Men has failed.  However, 10,000 sales for an indie studio that didn't produce many copies of the game (presumably) isn't pure hell.  That's $50k net.  While it doesn't make up for the development costs, it means that the name is out there...so if a major publisher were to back them on a sequel, there is a strong chance that the sequel could do infinite amounts better.

Remember, Beyond Good and Evil didn't have great sales either...but it's getting a sequel!

It didn't sell because the people who buy the Wii don't care about original properties, they care about licensed crap with waggle and games with "Wii" in the title. (Wii Play, Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii.)

One thing that that video did remind me of is how many mediocre platformers existed in the N64/PS1 era. Mushroom Men gave me that impression. Those games aren't made anymore for a reason.

I'd known about the game for a while.  I'd seen it advertised in magazines, and even read previews/reviews for it (I'm always on the lookout for something a little different).  Unfortunately, I would say none of what I read really gave the right impression of it.  Lost in translation, you could say.  I'm so glad Ryan & Jeff did a quick look for it.  I can't afford full price for it at the moment, but I'll be actively seeking it out for a nice price.

This was a great game, with some of the best sound and art direction I've seen in any game (yeah!) It is really sad that such a great, original game only sold 10,000 copies, if thats the true number. The game needed more polish and it even could have been a few levels longer, but really this has some of the best art, and sound of any game today. More games need meaningful sound designs, and Claypool's knack for the strange, and the trippy really add to the overall feel of this game and the story it wants to tell the player. It truly is saddening that such a great example to me for art and sound in games would be known, commercially as a failure.
