Does anybody know how to unlock new characters?

I know the game just came out today in the US but I was wondering if anybody knew how to unlock new characters for vs mode. I tried getting Storm Points to unlock them like Storm 2 but that doesn't seem to be it as I have 200,000 and no new characters. Is it story only or is there another way?
