As a Chinese deity, Ne Zha's original story has different versions. The most popular version is the story revealed in the classic Chinese novel Feng Shen Bang.
In this novel, Ne Zha is depicted as a child with three heads and six arms, although he can shapeshift into a normal human kid. Having immense strength and always angry, he mainly uses three magical weapons, including a burning spear, a red ribbon that traps enemies, and a metal ring that returns to him after he throws it to enemies. He steps on two flying magical burning rings which carry him to fly.
In this version of story, Ne Zha borns from a human family, he is way stronger than normal people since his childhood. It later reveals that he is the reincarnation of a magic gem. He is always angry and desires to fight, even killed a dragon for fun. Since the dragon is the son of a water deity of the east sea, he is forced to suicide as his punishment.
After his death, an immortal saint kept a piece of Ne Zha's soul and uses lotus roots to forge a new body for Ne Zha. Ne Zha is revived from death. He takes part in the ancient war between deities to decide the new order of heaven, and he joins the saint's team as planned. This war fulfills his desires for battles, and it turns out he is in the winners' team.
