A former prime time soap actor from Canada and science fiction icon due to his roles in the short-lived TV-Series Firefly, as well as the movie Serenity.

Born on March 27, 1971 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Nathan Fillion is a popular Canadian actor best known for his role as Malcolm Reynolds in the short lived but long loved television series, "Firefly".

Fillion was born under his parents, Bob and Cookie Fillion. He has stated that he is a descendant of Confederate Lieutenant, General Jubal A. Early, and has French Canadian, and Irish ancestry. He also has an older brother, Jeff.

Fillion has attended Holy Trinity Catholic High School, Concordia University College of Alberta, as well as the University of Alberta.

Career


Fillion's started out his career working in several theatres. He moved to New York city in 1994 and landed a role as Joey Buchanan in the soap opera "One Life to Live". He was subsequently nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award in the "Outstanding Younger Actor" category in 1996. He left the show in 1997 and moved to Los Angeles to pursue other projects. It was there that he played a supporting role in the sitcom "Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place". He also played James Fredrick Ryan in Stephen Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan".

It was in 2002 that Fillion began playing Captain Malcolm Reynolds in Joss Whedon's sci-fi TV series "Firefly". The role won him awards from the "Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, USA", and the "SyFy Genre Awards".

Despite "Firefly's" cancelation, a movie was made, "Serenity", where Fillion reprised his role as Captain "Mal". Fillion considers his time spent on "Firefly" to be the most fun he had on a TV series.

Fillion also provides his voice to many forms of media. He has lent his voice to animated TV series' such as, "King of the Hill", and "Justice League Unlimited". His voice has also been used in the video games, most notably, Halo 3.

Side Projects


Fillion continues to to star in movies, shows and other side projects, such as 2008's "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog", a musical created by Joss Whedon for the Internet to circumvent the writer's strike problems, where he played Captain Hammer. He is also working on a comedy series for TV with the working title, "Repo Brothers", which was recently picked up by ABC. Also, along with author PJ Haarsma, Fillion co-founded the organization "Kids Need to Read". It is a non-profit organization created in 2007 to help get books into underfunded libraries.

Most recently, Fillion started working on a TV series, "Castle", for ABC, in which he plays Richard Castle, a writer of mystery novels who helps the NYPD solve crimes.
