Someone get Tim Kitzrow on the phone.
Someone get Tim Kitzrow on the phone.
With little more than a logo and some sort of assurance that the final product will mix the old and the new, Electronic Arts has officially announced EA Sports NBA Jam, a revival of the classic arcade basketball franchise started by Midway and later dragged through the mud by Acclaim. Midway then went on to further develop its arcade basketball chops with NBA Hangtime and NBA Showtime before eventually ditching these Jam-based games in favor of the NBA Ballers series.

The released information has very little to say about what the new NBA Jam will be, though it's very careful to point out that it's going to stay "true to the original" and that it "mixes the old school with the new." Here's what Peter Moore has to say about all this:

“NBA JAM is one of the most recognizable franchises in videogame history,” said Peter Moore, President, EA SPORTS. “Diehard fans of the original game have been asking for a remake for more than a decade. We’re very excited to give them their wish this year with the return of this iconic franchise.”

On the game's official site, there's little more than a logo and a pair of guys selecting three-man teams that they'd like to use in the new game. While there's nothing firm out there on the topic, it seems safe to assume that the new NBA Jam will be a three-on-three game. There's also no confirmation on Mark Turmell's involvement. Turmell, who recently joined EA's Tiburon studio, is one of the men behind the original NBA Jam. The game, however, is being developed in Vancouver at EA Canada.

EA Sports NBA Jam is currently in development for the Wii and scheduled to be released in 2010.

I love the original.   I still occasionally blow out the old cartridge for a round or two.  I hope they do a good job with this....but I am a little skeptical.

This would be awesome except its going to be developed for the Wii......who ever made that decision is a complete idiot.

Give me a NBA Jam game with the graphics and capabilities of a game on the 360 and PS3 and I am really excited. Give me a NBA Jam game with the probability of there being stupid Wii controls, poor graphics, and a less in depth or complex experience and I say fuck you.

I don't like sports games. I don't play them. I had NBA Jam. Enough said...   also, "He's on Fire!", " Can't Buy a bucket!", "Is it the shoes?"

this makes sense now because EA has released the NHL Arcade, the Madden NFL Arcade, and so should we just consider this the NBA Arcade AKA NBA JAM?  Or is it going to be a full $60 release?

I think EA is underrating the appeal of the NBA Jam name.  This should be multiplatform.

I play some NBA Jam on occasion and it is legitimately still very fun.  Could it use some more depth?  Yes, and EA seems to realize that, but the core gameplay is still fun despite how basic it is.

    Agreed.

I loved the original - played it all the time on the SNES, but I can't help but wonder if it is another game that is better to preserve as a memory than to re-imagine as a "modern" game.

Only on the Wii? WTF? I would totally buy this (if it is fairly decent) if it were to come out for the 360. Doesn't make sense its Wii only, especially considering coming from EA!

Yeah it seems like NBA Jam would be better revived as a remade title on XBLA/PSN. Nostalgia would play a big part in it, even if they were to update the graphics and update rosters. A classic NBA Jam remake is the NBA Jam people would probably actually care about.

God - I loved NBA Jam back in the day...

What about the NBA Street franchise? That was pretty close to NBA Jam in terms of gameplay and tone... and I loved it just as much.

Anyways - I might be up for some arcady fun Basketball! Bring it on.

If this was an HD remake of the original with online play on XBLA, it would be the downloadable game of the year.

Adding voice to chorus: Only on the Wii? Well played, EA, well played. No, wait, I meant the opposite of that...

Also, I will have no interest in this (no matter what the platform) if they don't have the same announcer doing the classic lines. If they get some new kid in to bastardize it, forget it.

Having this on the Wii is hard.  The only reason this game was fun for me was I had people to play it with.  Wii basically cripples that, plus I don't think online play would be a good fit.

Not to run on the "Only on Wii" parade here, but from what I have read, no where does it say its only on the Wii. They have merely stated that it is in development for the Wii and has a 2010 release date. While one could simply conclude that it is a Wii only release, one could still assume it might come to 360/PS3, and has simply not been announced yet. Perhaps its just a quick news shot, to see how people react, and maybe they will then announce the 360/PS3 version based on said reaction.

Just being a little optimistic here.
