Released on November 15, 2005, Need for Speed: Most Wanted is an open-world street racing game that takes place in the fictional location of Rockport City. The game was well-known for its intense police chases and (perhaps even more famously) for its over-the-top full-motion video cutscenes that combine CGI with live actors. Most Wanted was followed by Need for Speed: Carbon.

Plot

The player takes on the role of a nameless street racer that has recently arrived in Rockport in his modified BMW M3 GTR. After befriending fellow racers Mia Townsend (played by Josie Maran) and Rog, the player runs afoul of Sgt. Cross, the leader of the Rockport police's Street Racing Unit, who vows to take down the player. After winning a couple of races, the player takes on Clarence "Razor" Callahan, who is the #15 racer on "the Blacklist" - a list of the fifteen most notorious racers in Rockport. However, Razor tampers with the player's car, winning the race and taking the player's car. The rest of the game involves the player working his way up the Blacklist to get back at Razor, who has used the player's car to take the #1 spot.

The final challenge has the player taking on Razor for the #1 spot. After beating him, Razor refuses to hand the player's car back and attempts to assault Mia for helping out the player. However, Mia subdues and arrests Razor, revealing herself to be an undercover cop. Mia hands back the keys to the player's old ride and allows him to flee the scene. With Sgt. Cross and the rest of the Rockport police chasing the player in a special Level Six pursuit, Mia calls the player to reveal the location of an old and unfinished bridge on the edge of town. The player's character jumps the bridge and the player escape town. The end of the game shows the police database being updated to reflect the player's new Most Wanted status.

The Blacklist

The focus of the game, the Blacklist is a list of the fifteen most notorious racers in Rockport. To progress through the game, the player must complete a set number of races, pursuit goals or "milestones" and achieve a certain amount of bounty in order to challenge a new Blacklist racer and move up the ranks. The game's Blacklist is, in order:
