From Retro/Grade developer, Matt Gilgenbach, Neverending Nightmares is a psychological horror game heavily inspired by the designer's experiences with mental illness.
If it's a very particular hallway with a pile of sorts obstructing the way: find a way to draw the patient to left side of the hall (near the therapist's office) using the environment. Once you do, you can tiptoe up and just avoid him as he charges to the source of the noise. Then, it's just a matter of quietly walking ahead of him back to the area he was blocking before.
I just beat the game yesterday, and this is the trickiest portion of gameplay in the entire thing. After I had died in that same spot a fair number of times without understanding what to do, the patrols were adjusted such that I could just sneak past normally.
