All right. This needs some clarification before I start getting into the details.
First off, let me outline my condition during all the important phases of this game:
1) While I watched the Quick Look (which was awesome, by the way), I was drunk.
2) When I staggered down to my local Gamestop to preorder this game, I was drunk.
3) While I was playing this game earlier today (and yes, it's 2AM here, I got it 2 hours ago because I'm buds with the Gamestop manager), I was drunk.
4) I'm drunk right now while writing this.
With that out of the way, let me clarify my history with Mario. I have a PC and a Wii. I've never owned an NES or SNES, though I have all the old Mario games via Wiiware and I've played them all a lot, so I have a pretty good understanding of what they're like. I also have Galaxy for the Wii, and I thought it was an awesome game.
With 4 people playing, 3 of whom are decidely drunk, I have found NSMBW to be the most entertaining thing since, well, ever. That's a pretty big clarifier, the drunk thing. Even Cabela's Dangerous Hunts is fun while drunk, but for this Mario game, I'm pretty sure being drunk is just a fringe bonus.
What do you guys think? Is this awesome or what? If you don't have any friends (meaning you're just doing single-player) then don't bother answering, because it certainly is "an entirely different game" when you play it co-op (for lack of a better word).
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Game » consists of 9 releases. Released Nov 12, 2009
The first 2D Mario platformer for a home console in over 15 years. Though it has single-player, it focuses heavily on cooperative multiplayer, allowing up to 4 players to play simultaneously. This game also premiered Nintendo's Super Guide hint system.
The Greatest Mario Game of All Time (?)
Super Mario World is the perfect game. Don't say a game can't be perfect because Super Mario World is. The only way you are going to find flaws is if you actively which is a stupid way to play games. I have yet to plat NSBwii but if it's half as good as Super Mario World it will be a five star game.
Anything is fun while drunk/crunk/high. As another poster above me said, if you need to be drunk to enjoy something then it's really not that great. I found NSMBW to be lacking, uninspired, and the multiplayer just overly chaotic and not a lot of fun. Mario Galaxy is more fun to play when you're messed up and I still think Mario Bros. 3 is the best Mario game.
I would say the classics are better.
And it must say something that they brought it back to the 2D style of old when it came to the gameplay.
" I am completely against playing games while drunk. It would make everything seem worse than it is. "Not true. You just need to play with equally inebriated people and not play a game where there are lasting consequences--like when I played Demon's Souls for an hour before going to bed after getting home from a pub.
games like Mario Kart and Paty are awesome drunk... or in any way intoxicated" Drunk? How can you possibly enjoy a Nintendo game when drunk? Sounds frustrating. Nintendo games are best played sober, so you can actually enjoy it. Anyway, since I am more of a 3D Mario guy, I wouldn't say it's the best Mario ever, but reviews are saying it's the best 2D one. "
No where near as good as 1, 3 or World.
I haven't unlocked all the star coins yet, but really just didn't enjoy the game very much. And I really don't understand all the praise for the multiplayer, which I found to be a total pain. You just end up getting in each others way, accidentally stealing power ups, knocking each other off ledges, etc. Not a fun experience. I much prefered the single player, but aside from a few clever references to the old games, I found it to be a very underwhelming experience.
Perhaps because it was coming off the back of 'Splosion Man, which had a genuinely great multiplayer component, which really required a lot of thought, skill and most importantly.. the players to work together.
Now that I've actually played some NSMBW (first 4 worlds, actually) I'll put in my two cents.
No, no it's not. Maybe it's just because I've played all of this before and the fun platforming doesn't strike me as awesome as it used to.
Bottom line: You can't just keep releasing 2D Mario games Nintendo, they're going to have to die at some point... unless you actually reinvent how they're played.
