It's come to light that there will be no new characters in Super Mario Bros Wii, meaning what we all saw at E3 2009 is the entire line up, according to what Miyamoto has said recently;

When asked about the playable characters being Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Another Toad, Shigeru Miyamoto says "That's it."

If it's true, it's pretty lame to the point of being comically bad, cosmetic or not, a selection of characters to choose from is what fans will naturally expect from this game, so why on earth is it limited to this very weak selection. Maybe just maybe he's adhering to the official company line so far, but it's hard to tell...

Why will fans naturally expect it now that they know it's not the plan? It's Super Mario Bros, you go save peach so she can't be playable and well, Mario and Luigi are going to save her as usual, with help from Yoshi and, uh, toads I guess. It's not Little Big Planet.

Miyamoto never seems to like those other Mario characters to use in his games. For crying out loud, he had Waluigi and Wario and others, and he didn't use them.

Lol, great title. Your on a roll tonight. I'm looking forward to the game, regardless of who's in it. I want to be mario and save the princess. Anything else is just fluff.

...besides, this is new SMB Wii, so why not take the opportunity to introduce some new characters.

I think it was Jeff who mentioned on one of the E3 bombcasts. Why didn't they just change the two toads to Wario and Waluigi or something like that? Hell just throw in Link and Samus and make then unlockable or something.

Seems daft to not have unlockable or alternate characters. Playing as two toads and the Mario Brothers seems a tad dull since character selection is pretty important to people these days.
