I thought it was cute in the first game but they should give it a rest.

I picked D but with a twist - it's something else that kills the game for me. 2D plane mario games have gotten quite stale for me in every new release and that is killing the games for me personally. The annoying Wah Wah sound just adds to my distaste for the latter entries of the 'new' series.

#4 Posted by Captain_Felafel (1568 posts) -

I fucking hate it. It was kind of nice at first, the first time it showed up, it was cute and charming and I dug it. Now? After what feels like 100 games later? Sick of it. LOSE THE DANCING TURTLES.

#5 Posted by august (3836 posts) -

2d mario games, back when 2d mario games were the mainline series, could be relied on to have incredible graphics and music and to look dramatically different from each other.

The "New" series of Mario games is the most generic shit imaginable when it comes to presentation.

#6 Posted by TheHBK (5474 posts) -

I fucking hate it. Also, I noticed Jeff retweet someone mentioning this, how did we get on this topic because since the first game, I thought it was stupid and since then, Nintendo seems to think that it should be the default Mario music cue or something.

#7 Posted by Hamst3r (4481 posts) -

It's terrible.

#8 Posted by Aleryn (704 posts) -

It was okay in the first New Super Mario game on the DS. Really despise it after that.

Can someone please post an example of said music? I am confused as to what "wah wah" is.

edit - nm, I googled mario wah wah music and found my answer. I am indifferent.

#10 Posted by BestUsernameEver (4825 posts) -

Wah Wah and Wub Wub music is very different. I like 90s house, dislike dubstep, if that is what OP means.

#11 Edited by egg (1455 posts) -

I dislike it, it drives me away from the series.

But it might be a combination of the music itself and the fact the stage/enemies dance to it. (at least in the original NSMB, not quite sure if the others do it) Just admitting that maybe if I didn't see that I wouldn't think the music is that bad.

My brother had an electronic keyboard capable of emulating 100 "instruments". From the Grand Piano to the scratches of a Vinyl record on a DJ's table. Instrument #100 was an assortment of fart sounds. Being only the tender age of 10, it was immediately one of his favorites. He would press a single key over and over, to some rhythm only he can hear in his head.

The "wah's" in these soundtracks are the equivalent of that fart music. There is an actual soundtrack to those stages, as charming as any other stage music, but it's drowned in unnecessary "wah's". Someone took that soundtrack and went "I should add an unnecessary sound to this every so often, also this sound should take precedence over the rest of the theme, people must hear my genius."

D. Just get through the level and get on with the game. A good castle theme will make things better.

#14 Posted by SpunkyHePanda (1615 posts) -

It's weird how much they're into that one track. It's even weirder that none of these games have THE Mario theme. I dunno if you heard, but that was a pretty good theme.

#15 Posted by OllyOxenFree (4970 posts) -

No, sir, I do not like it.

#16 Posted by TobbRobb (4603 posts) -

I googled the song. Not a fan.

#17 Posted by emem (1965 posts) -

When I heard just the "wah wah" part for the first time (I don't even know in which game, it has to be pretty old?) I thought it was totally fine, but too much is too much.

I have literally no clue what you're going on about, so if anyone could point me in the direction of a youtube video to the soundtrack explaining what this elusive wah wah music is?

I haven't played them, but I guess this is an extreme example.

#20 Posted by Tylea002 (2295 posts) -

@ervonymous: Man, that one A Capella sample just reminds me of how amazing that Crash Twinsanity soundtrack was. That game was all wah. Nothing but.

But it sounds fine, it's a deliberate soundtrack styling clearly, though I can totally see why people would want less of that one sample over and over.

#21 Posted by ervonymous (1297 posts) -

@Tylea002: Oh yeah, Nsanity Island! I loved the music but really didn't like the game otherwise, finally had to give up on Crash there.

#22 Posted by Tylea002 (2295 posts) -

@ervonymous: I really liked the game, wasn't as huge a leap forwards as it could have been, but I just wanted more crash in a different format, and that's what I got. And man. MAN.

All that haven't should listen to this. This is how you do "wah" right.

#23 Posted by SaFt (383 posts) -

It doesn't really bother me but It's not very interesting and pales in comparison to games like Galaxy and 3D Land which both have incredible music.

#24 Posted by ExplodeMode (852 posts) -

I don't like it but, once the Mario sound effects (jumps, coins, fireballs, whatever) are placed on top of it, it probably won't stick out so much.

#25 Posted by Marokai (2899 posts) -

Similar to Jeff's opinion on the bombcast I really really hate it and find it emblematic of everything that's wrong with that series. The music needs to change, the art needs to change, the level design/world design needs to change. The music is just the constant reminder of how completely rote that series has become.

#26 Posted by PolygonSlayer (425 posts) -

I thought it was very neat first time around, especially the enemies dancing to the sound, but man... they have done it to death by now.

#27 Posted by MooseyMcMan (10910 posts) -

I clicked that I liked it, only to realize shortly thereafter that the "wah wah" music is not what I think it is.

Yeah, this is not great stuff.

Also, I should have listened to this week's Bombcast before voting here, but whatever.

I couldn't agree more with Jeff. I hate it, HATE IT! I still love NSMB (despite NSMB 2 which just was not a great game) but the WAWAWAWAWAWAWA is driving me insane

Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes!

Mario is a franchise where they can do literally EVERYTHING, There is no theme that cannot be turned into a Mario Level yet we still just see Forest/Desert/Ice/Lava again and again. It's just soo much wasted potential

#29 Posted by Sayishere (1840 posts) -

Eh, i still like it.

#30 Posted by MEATBALL (3194 posts) -

It's pretty awful, particularly knowing Nintendo can do better, just look at Paper Mario Sticker Star, some of the music in that Quick Look was excellent. It won't stop me from enjoying NSMBU if it's good, though.

#31 Posted by ImHungry (377 posts) -

I definitely thought it was fine in the first game that I played with it. Now it's definitely starting to get a bit grating. And now that you've pointed it out to me it's become 10x worse.

#32 Posted by Lautaro (448 posts) -

I must be missing something, I think it's fine. Definitely wouldn't detract from my enjoyment of the game or whatever.

#33 Posted by kagato (911 posts) -

I dont care to be honest, its not my favourite Mario tune but it kind of goes along with the game now, when i see a Mario Bros title with "new" in the title i kind of expect to hear that noise. Ive never let the music of a game put me off playing it, i hate dance music but i still like wipeout, solution? Turn my own damn music on and turn off the games music in the settings leaving just the sound effects.

What the fuck is going on here? I have never ONCE heard anything against the music in Mario games before, and now that Jeff has said it on the Bombcast everyone is up in arms about it. If people hated it so much, you would have vented this before.

Hello, sheep!

#35 Posted by Dimsey (951 posts) -

It's alright I guess. I don't hate it but it definitely isn't the best Mario music.

#36 Posted by Colourful_Hippie (4339 posts) -

I didn't like it much when it first started showing up but now I'm at the point where I can no longer stand it. I couldn't agree more with what Jeff was saying.

#37 Posted by Phatmac (5725 posts) -

I'm with Jeff. It's ruining Mario music wise. I still like the gameplay but they have to stop using that music.

I've only played the original New Super Mario Bros DS game. I recently played it again and found the music pretty catchy for the most part. I didn't really notice an over abundance of "wah wah." Didn't realize so many people disliked it. Did it get a lot worse in Wii and 2 or something? I listened to the video posted in this thread and it's definitely more noticeable in that track but I wouldn't say it bothers me or anything.

reminds me of Rugrats -

#42 Posted by Baillie (4080 posts) -

@RazielCuts: I see no problem with being reminded for Rugrats.

#43 Posted by Hizang (8532 posts) -

Don't get me wrong, I really did like it back in the DS one, but It's just laziness now, get fucking rid of that shit.

#44 Posted by AuthenticM (3715 posts) -

I hate it. I don't think Koji Kondo knows how to write old-school music, which is super weird considering what he's done in the past.

Oh come on dont start that bs. Just cause you don't agree with the general take in the thread doesn't mean you have to dump on everyone else.

Not a fan of it but it doesn't kill the game for me. The lack of any originality in the series sure does.
#47 Posted by JasonR86 (9657 posts) -

I don't really care about it. But I would be really aware of that music, but not necessarily embarrassed by it, while playing the games that have the 'wah wah' in front of someone else.

#48 Posted by RazielCuts (2950 posts) -

@Baillie: I didn't say there was, I like Rugrats. Just reminds me of a particular 90's era when you found the wah/bah sound on your old Casio keyboard and thought it was really cool but now 20 years later it's quaint but ultimately played out.

#49 Posted by Benny (1951 posts) -

Always hated it, and I thought I was the only one.

#50 Posted by AngelN7 (2970 posts) -

Wasn't that track in like the first New Super Mario Brothers for the DS?... oh well they talk about it on the bombcast so I guess now is relevant, is a silly song that plays mostly on the first world it's not a big deal.
