New Super Mario Bros.
A series of games featuring the DS debut of New Super Mario Bros. and its sequel, New Super Mario Bros. Wii for the Wii.
What's your opinion on the "Wah Wah" music?
I picked D but with a twist - it's something else that kills the game for me. 2D plane mario games have gotten quite stale for me in every new release and that is killing the games for me personally. The annoying Wah Wah sound just adds to my distaste for the latter entries of the 'new' series.
Wah Wah and Wub Wub music is very different. I like 90s house, dislike dubstep, if that is what OP means.
I dislike it, it drives me away from the series.
But it might be a combination of the music itself and the fact the stage/enemies dance to it. (at least in the original NSMB, not quite sure if the others do it) Just admitting that maybe if I didn't see that I wouldn't think the music is that bad.
My brother had an electronic keyboard capable of emulating 100 "instruments". From the Grand Piano to the scratches of a Vinyl record on a DJ's table. Instrument #100 was an assortment of fart sounds. Being only the tender age of 10, it was immediately one of his favorites. He would press a single key over and over, to some rhythm only he can hear in his head.
The "wah's" in these soundtracks are the equivalent of that fart music. There is an actual soundtrack to those stages, as charming as any other stage music, but it's drowned in unnecessary "wah's". Someone took that soundtrack and went "I should add an unnecessary sound to this every so often, also this sound should take precedence over the rest of the theme, people must hear my genius."
D. Just get through the level and get on with the game. A good castle theme will make things better.
It's weird how much they're into that one track. It's even weirder that none of these games have THE Mario theme. I dunno if you heard, but that was a pretty good theme.

I have literally no clue what you're going on about, so if anyone could point me in the direction of a youtube video to the soundtrack explaining what this elusive wah wah music is?
I haven't played them, but I guess this is an extreme example.
@ervonymous: Man, that one A Capella sample just reminds me of how amazing that Crash Twinsanity soundtrack was. That game was all wah. Nothing but.
But it sounds fine, it's a deliberate soundtrack styling clearly, though I can totally see why people would want less of that one sample over and over.
@Tylea002: Oh yeah, Nsanity Island! I loved the music but really didn't like the game otherwise, finally had to give up on Crash there.
I don't like it but, once the Mario sound effects (jumps, coins, fireballs, whatever) are placed on top of it, it probably won't stick out so much.
Similar to Jeff's opinion on the bombcast I really really hate it and find it emblematic of everything that's wrong with that series. The music needs to change, the art needs to change, the level design/world design needs to change. The music is just the constant reminder of how completely rote that series has become.
I thought it was very neat first time around, especially the enemies dancing to the sound, but man... they have done it to death by now.
I clicked that I liked it, only to realize shortly thereafter that the "wah wah" music is not what I think it is.
Yeah, this is not great stuff.
Also, I should have listened to this week's Bombcast before voting here, but whatever.
I couldn't agree more with Jeff. I hate it, HATE IT! I still love NSMB (despite NSMB 2 which just was not a great game) but the WAWAWAWAWAWAWA is driving me insane

Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes!
Mario is a franchise where they can do literally EVERYTHING, There is no theme that cannot be turned into a Mario Level yet we still just see Forest/Desert/Ice/Lava again and again. It's just soo much wasted potential
I dont care to be honest, its not my favourite Mario tune but it kind of goes along with the game now, when i see a Mario Bros title with "new" in the title i kind of expect to hear that noise. Ive never let the music of a game put me off playing it, i hate dance music but i still like wipeout, solution? Turn my own damn music on and turn off the games music in the settings leaving just the sound effects.
I didn't like it much when it first started showing up but now I'm at the point where I can no longer stand it. I couldn't agree more with what Jeff was saying.
You haven't been on online forums on this topic, clearly. What the fuck is going on here? I have never ONCE heard anything against the music in Mario games before, and now that Jeff has said it on the Bombcast everyone is up in arms about it. If people hated it so much, you would have vented this before.
Hello, sheep!
I've only played the original New Super Mario Bros DS game. I recently played it again and found the music pretty catchy for the most part. I didn't really notice an over abundance of "wah wah." Didn't realize so many people disliked it. Did it get a lot worse in Wii and 2 or something? I listened to the video posted in this thread and it's definitely more noticeable in that track but I wouldn't say it bothers me or anything.

Hello, sheep!
Well, if you don't mind. Can you link me to these topics?
I hate it. I don't think Koji Kondo knows how to write old-school music, which is super weird considering what he's done in the past.

I thought it was cute in the first game but they should give it a rest.
I feel exaclty the same way.
Oh come on dont start that bs. Just cause you don't agree with the general take in the thread doesn't mean you have to dump on everyone else. What the fuck is going on here? Hello, sheep!
Not a fan of it but it doesn't kill the game for me. The lack of any originality in the series sure does.
@Baillie: I didn't say there was, I like Rugrats. Just reminds me of a particular 90's era when you found the wah/bah sound on your old Casio keyboard and thought it was really cool but now 20 years later it's quaint but ultimately played out.
