Yeah, these guys.
In case you forgot, the fun-lovers over at Rare are responsible for the Xbox 360's avatar system. So that's why they can speak to sites like videogaming247 about upcoming plans for the little dudes.

Specifically, they've confirmed that games will eventually be able to bestow specific pieces of avatar clothes or accessories as you complete things, sort of like achievements work today. Rare goes on to tell the site that they're working with "multiple partners" who are interested in incorporating that sort of functionality.

Well hey, good! The whole point of achievements is so that you have something you can show off to other players, and rewarding players with specific items is a handy way to make the players who started recently (and thus don't have tens of thousands of achievement points already) still feel like they have something to compete for and show off with. Off the top of my head, here are a handful of clothing-type items we'd want to unlock by playing games:

What sort of stuff do you want to see on your avatars? Or, hey, what about your PlayStation Home dude?

That sounds awesome.

#3 Posted by Zergvasion (43 posts) -

I heard rumblings of this becoming a reality back when NXE was first shown off.
I am SO happy they are actually going to implement it.
I want my biker jacket, dammit!

#4 Posted by erinfizz (1048 posts) -

oh god....that song is getting stuck in my head....aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. grr.

My avatar mostly needs some pants that look normal. The girl clothes choices are weird.

#5 Posted by albedos_shadow (1485 posts) -

My avatar can only be complete with both an eyepatch and a bionic arm. Make it happen, Microsoft!

#6 Edited by KnifeySpoony (1166 posts) -

Big Daddy helmet and a Bionic Arm, this sounds exactly like a previous podcast discussion you guys had before (brainstorming ideas for the avatars and what purpose they could serve with achievements). If you can wear multiple things at once, and not have to choose either the helmet or the arm, then this is great.

#7 Posted by Seram (192 posts) -

I want a Zack's crazy futuristic shiny suit thing from Dead or Alive.

#8 Posted by norton123 (311 posts) -

Big Daddy Helmet definitely.

#9 Posted by thecombine (19 posts) -

i'd probably love me some sort of street fighter clothing.

#10 Posted by Pie (7110 posts) -

PIP BOY from Fallout would be coolio

#11 Posted by EmptyQuarter (93 posts) -

Yeah, Fudgehog tail!

#12 Posted by RHCPfan24 (8609 posts) -

Hey, it's KUSH!!! OMG!

Anyway, I want to get a Big Daddy helmet and a Lancer.

#13 Posted by darkjester74 (1590 posts) -

Big Daddy helmet fo sho'...Also? A PipBoy for my avatar would be 100% freshly squeezed awesomeness.

#14 Posted by Havoc (7 posts) -

bandana and scars (gears of war 2)
master chief helmet (take a guess...)
dog (fable 2)
brucie swag (GTA 4)
nico's blue and white jacket (GTA 4)
assassin's hood or hidden blade (assasin's creed)
kazooie backpack (B&K nuts and bolts)
knight helmet (castle crashers)
elica (prince of persia)

#15 Posted by MKHavoc (1307 posts) -

Maybe a Jetpack for Dark Void.

#16 Posted by Falconer (1695 posts) -

COG tags (Gears of War 2/3)
Bloody shirt (Dead Rising 2/Left 4 Dead (2))
Any and all items from Criterion's store (Burnout Paradise)
Show girl's hat... thing (Rainbow 6 Vegas 2)

And NO Master Chief stuff.... EVER!

Recon armour

#18 Posted by piropeople13 (399 posts) -

I want to be able to redesign my avatar completely.  Right now all the avatars look like high-resolution Miis with opposable thumbs.  They are all so cutesy.  I want my avatar to look more BA with better and more rigid body parts.  Not just accesories to dress up the current one.

NXE is still a crappy gimmick thinly disguising a new advertisment delivery system to me.  Yeah all that stuff on the dashboard is paid placement and therefor ad's, just like the front page of the iTunes store.  What makes it okay for the iTunes store and not for the Xbox dashboard is that we all paid good money for our 360 and each of our games, it disgusts me that i have to look at ads everytime I boot up MY piece of hardware.  It is all greedy M$ bullshit.

#19 Posted by CreamyGoodness (1086 posts) -

i want to see the teabag attachment for halo 3

#20 Posted by ParadoxControl (177 posts) -

A Ryu head band,

Akuma's Gi
Car Shirts (burnout!)
Guitars (Rock Band)
Lancer (duh)
Recon Armor! (you can haz recon!)

This would be a great replacement for "You just earned a gamer picture!" I would much rather get a MAW themed Avatar peace then a gamer picture.
#21 Posted by Pie (7110 posts) -

They should implement avatars more. because at the moment only friends can see it. They should somehow make it the new gamercard

#22 Posted by Lilarcor (213 posts) -

This is exactly what they should be doing with this feature. If I had unlocked a Vault 101 jumpsuit for beating Fallout 3, you'd bet your ass I'd have my virtual dude decked out in that right now.

#23 Posted by Pie (7110 posts) -

They shouldnt be suits just small accesories. this would mean that no one looks completely like master chief

#24 Posted by Karmum (11519 posts) -

As long as I don't have to pay for these stuff, I couldn't care less what I unlock clothing-wise from these games.

#26 Posted by CitizenKane (10507 posts) -

That actually sounds pretty awesome.  Like Pie already said, I want Recon armor for playing Halo 3: ODST.

#27 Posted by Alphazero (1540 posts) -

Vault 101 Jumpsuit plus pipboy for me.

#28 Posted by DrRandle (1205 posts) -
#29 Posted by Vinchenzo (6192 posts) -

It's nice to see this kind of implementation. Currently, avatars retain that sense of "ya my friend's avatar looks like mine, but with a different shirt." These new objects will add much-needed variety.

So, this is news when it happens in the xbox, but when its on home, like the announced SF costumes, and the Killzone one its not?

#31 Posted by Sparky_Buzzsaw (6315 posts) -

I'd love some zombie-type scars and such from a game like Dead Rising or Left 4 Dead.  Combine that with some Halo-type armor, and you'd have me sold!

Gotta be COG Armor from Gears. Gotta be.

#33 Posted by Jeffsekai (7044 posts) -

I went to a HP/Microsoft event a while ago, where they showed a Avatar that looked like Master chief n other such thin gs and said that you could unlock it with achievements.

#34 Posted by Pibo47 (3166 posts) -

Yeah. I would love stuff like this...

For sure! Would love that.

Awesome idea. But I am the kind of boring guy who wouldnt utilise any of that sort of crap. SF IV costume would kill though for that I might change my mind.

I just want my receding hairline, damnit. My Wii has one... looks just like mine.

#39 Edited by Artemis_D (817 posts) -

If I could get a championship belt for my avatar... well ... that would be just dandy.

But, I would also want the ability to make my avatar look like The Junkyard Dog.

Kameo's Gear

#41 Posted by Will (234 posts) -

Thats pretty cool, they BioShock 2 and MK9 items would be sweet.

#42 Posted by Maxszy (2064 posts) -

This is actually pretty cool. Though I think it will only really catch on if it is implented in a widespread way.

#43 Posted by KyleBaron (160 posts) -

How about a backpack with Kazooie in it?

#44 Posted by Aaox (1657 posts) -

Finally. Awesome.

#45 Posted by Duckbutter (412 posts) -

i'd like to see both my Home and XBL dudes naked in a top hat. whats the point of achievement clothes with the XBL avatars though? so what you have a Master Chief Helmet for the 4 seconds somebody see's your avatar. Microsoft needs to rip-off Home with some kind of XBL Avatar MMO or somethin. Home may be a yawn-parade but at least i can do the running man in front of a chick, while i'm decked out in the flyest in Dig Dug attire.

Lara Croft, Faith and that Portal chick's costumes for the ladies.
Assasins Creed, Nico, Master Chief, Issac, Gears suits, that Prince of Persia dude's costumes for the fellers.

#46 Posted by TheHBK (5508 posts) -

Sweet, even more reason to get multiplatform games on the 360.  Lets see what I can come up with.
Halo ODST - Helmet, easy
Resident Evil 5 - STARS Jacket
Call of Duty 6 - The ghillie suit
Gears2 - Marcus' Bandana

#47 Posted by Red (5995 posts) -

This is great, gamerpics are great awards for getting achievements but they're not always so visible and some of them aren't too exciting. But, like if you were to get a Gunblade for your Avatar by beating FFXIII or get a lancer for beating Gears of War 2 or slowly get Recon Armor while playing through Halo 3 or get a Companion Cube shirt for beating Portal: Still Alive.

It's a great idea that could definitely be fun and I can't stop thinking we'll be seeing an action game where you use your Avatar and your outfit changes your stats.
#48 Posted by Lies (3867 posts) -

I spot a Kush in this news story

This would be cool if I cared at all about my avatar :|

#49 Posted by sarahsdad (1112 posts) -

It also occurs to me that it would be great to have an option so that when you are playing a game and someone browses you on the friends list, you could show up in a suit or with gear from that game.

#50 Posted by pornstorestiffi (4939 posts) -

I Just want an option to disable my Avatar, i really hate looking at it, and its just there staring you in the face when ever you turn on your Xbox 360. At least i don't have to look at the Home avatars when i boot up my PS3.
