Who the hell has been adding images to our Street Fighter IV page?
Who the hell has been adding images to our Street Fighter IV page?
Capcom's big daddy community Seth Killian dropped new details on the Unity blog today about the Championship Mode update coming to Street Fighter IV for freebies next Friday, the 24th. The big news is the tournament structure, which is clearly geared toward people who are really good at Street Fighter.

The tournaments offer a new take on classic SFIV competition. They are broken out into 5 different levels, which means everyone can participate and find a good challenge without getting blown out of the water or bored. You score Grade Points (GP) for tournament wins, and as your GP total grows, you’ll become eligible to enter into more exclusive tournaments. Winning tournaments will also net you Championship Points (CP). The CP work basically like “prize money” up for grabs in the tournament. The higher the GP skill of the players in a particular tournament, the bigger the CP prize!

In true tournament tradition, character selection is double-blind. With the CP purse on the line, you won't be able to see who your opponent has picked until you've both made your choices, and the battle is set to begin.

Seriously, what?
Seriously, what?
In the vein of features-everyone-can-get-something-out-of, there's also a new saved replay function.

Replays are generated straight from the Championship Mode tournaments. The top 5000 Championship Point leaders will be given the option to upload a replay, which are then available for anyone to watch. On PS3, viewers can watch your replay and vote in real time according to characteristics like “beautiful” or “funny.” Replays will be ranked according to the user-submitted reviews, making it easy to find the flavor of replays you want to see. On X360, you can’t vote on the matches, but you can watch and then save a number of your favorites. While watching your saved matches, you’ll also have the option to turn on input commands (just like the Training Mode option), so you can see the gritty details of exactly what button and joystick inputs the top players are using to win.

I'm a little disappointed there's still no casual quarter match option, which would let you get in a party with your friends and watch each other fight while you wait for your turn. But who am I to complain? Propers to Capcom for adding onto the game's competitive framework--and not charging for it.

UPDATE: Famitsu has a bunch of shots of the actual update. But those creepy shots of SFIV girls aren't going anywhere. In fact, see below for the worst one yet.

No spectators? Way to not deliver what people ACTUALLY want.

The big thing for me is the double-blinds.  Now my whoever I'm playing won't wait to see who I'm playing Blanka only to ultimately pick Ken...removing formalities FTW!

Finally, double blind.

GB tournaments can only improve once it's released!

Jesus, why do Goken and Cammie keep getting shit on? Like in those pictures, for example.

sweet. I like SFIV. I like competition. I like free.
Question: Why are the replay modes different on each console?
JJOR64 on April 17, 2009
Hell yeah!  I'm excited.

This is something I'll never use. Quarter Match is what is needed. That turned off a lot of people from playing. At least this is free.

O.O

Those Pics...they are disturbing...

Hmmm, this comes out for free, many people will find this a great addition to the game, while RE5 multiplayer, which sucks monkey nuts, comes out for 5 bucks?  Who the fuck is running shit at Capcom that lets shit like this be so incosistent.

"Last, but most certainly not least, disconnecters, aka pullers, aka ragequitters, your days are numbered: If you disconnect during a match, the system will also dock you your progress in the tournament, so pullers will never be able to advance into the higher ranks of tournaments. What’s even more fun is that the system also happily displays your disconnect percentage, so if you've got a bad habit, it's right there for everyone to see."

One of the more favorable addition I may add :)

looks like this is going to be well worth my time, oh and the update is cool too

If the grading system actually works and can allow casual players to actually have a good time, I am all for it.

Sweeeeeeeeet! Sure it doesn't have all the features we'd like, maybe they didn't put spectating in just yet because it had too much of a detrimental effect on the netcode to be truly useful? They will hopefully get around to that someday, but for now... this is great!

Also, those images are pretty classic!

I also hope the update fixes some of the bugs I have encounter.

Excellent pictures.

Spectator mode would be nice... But woudln't there be a lag issue.. or something like that if too many people were spectating? I don't know these things but maybe when championship edition 2 comes out :p
