Video Game News, Stories and Updates for the PS3, XBOX 360, PC, PSP, Wii, and DS

Added by Brad Shoemaker on July 2, 2009

Somebody at Sega pulled the big shiny lever marked "Release Alpha Protocol News!" today, repeatedly. First up, the game's release date: October 6. That covers releases on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. The game's been delayed pretty heavily, but then, what we saw of it at E3 looked like Obsidian has been spending the extra time polishing the game up, so maybe that's for the best.

Next up, the latest developer diary for the game, going into more detail about Michael Thorton's most dangerous mission.

Lastly, the box art! Obsidian informs us the official title is still just Alpha Protocol, with the "Espionage RPG" business constituting a tagline, not a subtitle. In case you were wondering!

Who among you is sold on Alpha Protocol already? It sounds ambitious to me, but I'm in kind of a wait-and-see mode before I get too hyped for it.

i'm pretty excited about this game, looks to be pretty really awesome.
I dunno about the box-art though. especially that espionage rpg tagline. seems a little weird.

agreed. the box is pretty lame looking, although the game itself has potential.

The tagline is silly.

I'm a little hesaitant about the whole timie limit on the speech options thing (I like to think before I act), but the game itself looks pretty great. I could also watch that guy get his head slammed into a bar for hours.

One of my most anticipated games of the Fall is coming out on October 6. Yay! Also, am I the only one who doesn't like the box art?

I'm sold on it -- it looked pretty sweet at E3.  I think he could have something better in his left hand than another gun.  A loop of garrote wire maybe.

Box art looks like a 90's tech thriller...

And the whole, "The Espionage RPG" thing just looks odd, out of place, and unneeded.

Game looks interesting, looking forward to trying it.
That box art is ugly as hell though...

I have a lot of time for Obsidian games, but I can see this getting mediocre reviews and flopping pretty hard sales wise.

I guess they've crunched the numbers, but second-tier devs releasing expensive new IP in the holiday crush always seems like a terrible idea to me.

You're gonna put this up against Mass Effect and Dragon Age?  Srsly?  Good luck with that.

I haven't really read into it yet. I should have a look, could be good.

Also, box art creativity GO!:

Edit:  Blue and Goldy Orange?  Check.  Dude posing with pistol?  Check.  Washed out background of something Spy-y?  Check.  Looks like we've got us a spy game!

Its not actually up against Mass Effect 2, that's next year. And its a very different game than Dragon Age, so I think they will find different markets. But I agree, it is probably gonna flop in sales, no matter how good it is. It looks hella promising though and that's why I'm excited.

Looks kinda crappy tbh.
Yet there's a split second scene in the beginning with a naked woman in a bed. Amagad!, have we got another sex scene?

Who the hell cares what the box looks like? It's not as though you split your time between playing the game and ogling the box art.

The game sounds cool in concept, but the promo videos haven't sold me on it. The conversation stance system looks cool, and the timer is an interesting mechanic that could create some frenetic decision-making moments during dialogue. As someone who often takes breaks to get a snack or take a leak during RPG dialogue, I'm looking forward to the possibility of something innovative in that regard.

There are too many intriguing titles coming out this Fall to buy it day and date though, but, if it reviews well, I'll probably pick it up down the road.

"The" Espionage RPG?

eh. Seems odd.

@ververdan0226: ME2 isn't out until next year?? *sob*  Still, I guess it makes sense for Bioware not to compete with themselves.

Well, that gives Alpha Protocol a fighting chance at least.  I still think it'll flop hard, but I really hope it doesn't.  Obsidian deserve a hit they can call their own.

I will probably get it.  It looks like the kind of game you can take your time with, and play however you want.
