Pac-Man sez: "Only chumps pay retail!"
Pac-Man sez: "Only chumps pay retail!"
When Amazon first announced that it was going to start selling Xbox Live Arcade games, I didn't really see the point. The whole Xbox Marketplace system is built into the console itself, so what's the point of going through an online transaction on another device? Today, thanks to Giant Bomb super-friend MrJared, it's starting to make a bit more sense to me. For starters, you can buy XBLA games through Amazon individually; when you buy them through the console, you have to buy a block of Marketplace points, which inevitably leaves you with a balance of an odd number of points just sitting on your account. More importantly, Amazon has started selling certain XBLA games at a discount, which, other than lucking into discount points cards on sale at some random retailer, is pretty much the only way to get those games for less than retail. Right now you can get Doom for $2.97 and Pac-Man Championship Edition for $4.97, the former of which is a seminal video game classic, and the latter of which I consider to be one of the finest games to hit the service.

I'd be full of shit if I said I didn't have $3 to waste, but I don't have a credit card, and Amazon does not take PayPal. I already have Pacman, too. Wish I could get Doom.

I made a thread about this and checked to make sure no one had posted anything about it in the forums, but I guess I didn't check twitter posts.

You know, this only serves to emphasize how stupid the points system is. I find myself jumping on a game deal if I can see right off how much money it is actually going to cost me. I'd rather not whip out a calculator or a scrap of paper and do the conversion myself, and I hate having points left over, so doing it that way only discourages me from buying anything through Live.

Already own both of those, but I'll keep my eye on other titles. Thanks for the heads up.

I was all over Doom for $3. I'm happy to see Amazon is already offering deals on their newly established XBLA content. Hopefully they'll add DLC to the mix soon.

I hope they discount some other games that I don't have soon.

The only problem with Doom on XBLA is that you have to hold down left trigger to run, which can get pretty tiresome.  I wish they implemented "Run Toggle" like Duke Nukem on XBLA.
