Battlefield Heroes Goes Live

EA and DICE's wonderfully stylized, free-to-play shooter gets a soft launch.

After a beta period that seemed about as long as the actual Great War, DICE and EA have finally made Battlefield Heroes live. It's kind of on the downlow at the moment, though, without any fanfare or press releases. Here's the official line from EA PR:

Battlefield Heroes is currently in soft launch. We'll have an official announcement soon.

I dabbled in the Battlefield Heroes beta a bit, and in addition to being pleasantly surprised by how sharp and easy-to-pick-up the action was, I think the art style and the general tone they've struck gives it a huge amount of personality. In a lot of ways, it's got a lot in common with Team Fortress 2, though with (presumably) less jars full of urine. Perhaps the most significant differentiator between the two is the fact that Battlefield Heroes is free-to-play, with EA making its money off advertising and microtransactions. My time with the live version of the game has been brief, but my snap impression is that there's a whole lot of fun to be had with this game for free. Since EA's not yet ready to start getting people pumped for Battlefield Heroes, I figured I'd lend a helping hand by reaching through your screen and punching you directly in the brain with this Saturday morning trailer. Once that gets your blood pumping, you can sign up to play Battlefield Heroes here , though keep in mind this is currently a Windows-only operation, and you'll need Internet Explorer or Firefox to get the party started.

This is so cheesy. I love it.

Ya the game is fun for sure but with three classes it definitely gets old quickly
smokeHon June 25, 2009 at 12:15 p.m.
wow, kind of a similarity to team fortress no?
TheMustacheHeroon June 25, 2009 at 12:16 p.m.
This trailer is a whole lot better than the game itself.

So I followed the instructions to install it (aka allowed it to install an add-on to firefox and restarted the browser), but rather than installing the game files, I receive this error message:

"An error occurred: Could not find build."

Anyone else getting this?

@LGJ:
Failure.

Huh, Firefox thought the Add-on was 4GB for some reason. Weird. Oh well, time to check this out!

... Error: Could not find build.

Yay!

Battlefield Heroes, heroes!

Meh, I thought it was dull myself, I would rather be playing other paid for games online, than wasting time with this on the evidence of the beta.

Commendable none the less.

been in the beta for this for quite a while, and trust me once they add tons of content and polish shit up, this'll be a gem.

heaps of fun yessir!!!

I've been in the beta for a bit. Good to see it finally launching! Fun stuff.
Tovan51on June 25, 2009 at 12:22 p.m.
I've said it before but, the game would be so much more playable with a server browser. It is way too hard to find "playable" games right now.

@smokeH: No.

I played the beta, it's nothing special. The original whistle trailer music was much better though, this just reminded me of Pokemon.
Rinkalicouson June 25, 2009 at 12:23 p.m.
I played the Beta, and thought it was much better when you could choose from all the clothes for free and customise your character how you liked it. Now, it's way too much work, imo, to just get enough money to RENT a badass coat, let alone own it.
PapaLazarouon June 25, 2009 at 12:32 p.m.
Thought it was a very poor boring game myself and I don't see the point in making a browser based game download to your client and start up there in forced fullscreen mode with no option of windowed. The whole point of a browser based free game is to play it in the browser like Quake Live.
Sanitysendon June 25, 2009 at 12:34 p.m.
this game is actually pretty addicting haha
Johnny5on June 25, 2009 at 12:35 p.m.
Im not a fan of the "digital renting" with real money. I mean... renting ....digital goods? God awful. Battlefield Heroes? pretty fun.
Out_On_Bailon June 25, 2009 at 12:38 p.m.
For whatever reason I can't seem to get it to work.  "cannot find build" is what it says.  I guess this explains the soft launch, they new it would be hit or miss?  Anyone else have this problem that might be able to help me out?
JoelTGMon June 25, 2009 at 12:38 p.m.
The game was fun, but in higher levels some abilities (like grenade spam) become too powerful, and you'll find yourself randomly being killed instantly.

Dig Deeper into Battlefield Heroes

Battlefield Heroes is EA DICE's casual take on the Battlefield series. It features a cartoon-like graphical style and is played from a third person perspective. It is also a "Play 4 Free" game.

US Release Date: June 26, 2009
