Hey all. As previously threatened, Whiskey Media is planning on opening up the databases to both Comic Vine and Giant Bomb through the use of some clever API hooks in the coming weeks. The API will include live search and filter abilities in JSON and XML formats for all wiki-related content on both sites. The API will not include any user-level data and in our beta version will be read-only.

If you have any interest in building applications with either data set and want a sneak peek at our work before we release it please send an email out to api@whiskeymedia.com. We haven't worked out the specifics of the licensing structure yet, but it will likely be provided in a free to use, attribution, non-commercial format.

In your email please include your name, country of origin, programming language of choice as well as a brief description of what you'd like to use the data for.

No thanks, I like maintaining servers, not programming apps for them. That's just crazy talk.

It basically means we're freeing the data up for use on other sites and applications. Say someone has a really great idea for a collection website, but doesn't have access to a games or comics database. Using our API, they can use our data for free to power that site.

Hey Snide - I have an idea for the site but I don't generally know where it ties into with this API lark and I obviously have no idea how to program such a thing. It's more an idea for other site users or yourselves.

You know how on Firefox you can add custom search engines in the top right for various sites - Wikipedia, Google, Last FM, Facebook etc... is it possible to get a GiantBomb one?

Anyway - probably totally unrelated to what you're talking about here but just an idea for you/everyone.

I at least know what an API is and I've worked a bit with XML modding C&C3, but I rather leave this to the professionals.

Yeah, like most other people, I would love to help, but have no clue what you're talking about. Good luck with the changes though.

Wow, you guys must have been working hard behind the scenes. I'm no developer, but I can see this being really useful to a load of people. Well done guys.

This is cool, I think!  But I don't know what is going on!  Is this a new video game?  Cool!  I like games!
