Call Of Duty Name Back On Modern Warfare 2

On again, off again--this time on for good?

Straight from Robert "fourzertwo" Bowling's Twitter feed--by now the most up-to-the-minute news source for all things Infinity Ward--comes this image, and the following message.

Just recieved the first Modern Warfare 2 boxes straight off the press. "Shit just got real."

You'll note of course the addition of the Call of Duty name to the package, which is abrupt if not surprising given the marketing magnitude of that brand. I reached out to Activision for feedback, so I'll pass any comments along as they're received.

But let's not get distracted from the important issue, which user "WindsWilling"  summed up so eloquently on Bowling's original photo post.

So, holding the 360 and PC boxes leaving out the PS3 version. Typical Infinity Ward bias. You're part of the problem.

Uh huh.

UPDATE: We're all gawking at the box art around here, and, hey, wait a minute. Does anyone else think that thing in the background looks a lot like the American Capitol Building in Washington D.C. with a chunk taken out of the dome?

The plot thickens!

Aw jeez, when will they figure it out?
Hyuzenon July 9, 2009 at 1:30 p.m.
well they did say that they were missing some attention by less bright consumers who didn't recognize it without the call of duty name in front

TIOE IZ SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BIASED!!!!!!!11111
TheTerrifyeron July 9, 2009 at 1:30 p.m.

Babymauleron July 9, 2009 at 1:31 p.m.
I looks tacked on and out of place.
RsistncEon July 9, 2009 at 1:31 p.m.
Makes sense to throw the CoD logo on there, more brand recognition and more sales as a result, even if those sales are coming from the mentally retarded folk.
Satuneon July 9, 2009 at 1:31 p.m.
What, Xbox live enabled? Why would you want that for a Call of Duty game?
RHCPfan24on July 9, 2009 at 1:31 p.m.
I saw that update on Twitter but I failed to notice the "COD" title right there. I am sure I would have eventually but I was just struck that they stuck with the same artwork that was on Game Informer's cover. It is a great cover but usually the box art and magazine cover differentiate. Oh well, I am still buying this.
canucks23on July 9, 2009 at 1:32 p.m.
meh, the game's gonna be the same, and i'm 100% sure that this was Activisions call, not IW's.
gingertastic_10on July 9, 2009 at 1:33 p.m.
Glad that's finally figured out. My 13 year old cousin was bragging to me the other day about how he knew Modern Warfare 2 wasn't going to have the Call of Duty name. Well I have a few things to say to him now.
VWGTIon July 9, 2009 at 1:33 p.m.
Notice how the soilder is looking away from the Call of Duty name? OH SNAP!

I don't know if I'd want someone who cannot figure out that Modern Warfare 2 is the sequel to CoD4 playing my game. They might get too excited and go on a shooting rampage.
ververdan0226on July 9, 2009 at 1:33 p.m.
All I know is that my brother and his friend keep telling me how excited they are for COD 6.

EDIT: Holy shit Brad, you're right. It does look pretty similar...
coffeesashon July 9, 2009 at 1:35 p.m.
I don't know a lot about the series but I thought that the prequel to this was best known as 'Call of Duty 4'. Won't it confuse most 'casual' people with the 'Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2' name? I guess anything that says Call of Duty at the beginning will sell a ton anyway so really I guess it was just in their best interests to get that name back.
canucks23on July 9, 2009 at 1:37 p.m.
wait... is that the capitol building behind the soldier? looks like it could be.

Edit: lol looks like great minds think alike!
TheHBKon July 9, 2009 at 1:39 p.m.
Oh shit yeah!  That is the capitol building, a whole firefight in one of the congressional chambers?  Sweet.  As for the PS3 bias, dude, its not the lead platform and for a reason, its not doing so hot!
HatKingon July 9, 2009 at 1:41 p.m.

Wow if the battle takes place partially on American soil I'm a lot more interested in this than I thought I was.  I didn't think they'd be able to do anything mind blowing or shocking as having your character die, but this would be a good step for that.  *EXCITE*

Player1on July 9, 2009 at 1:41 p.m.
I figured they would do this. I mean lets be honest, Call of Duty has sooo much pull when it comes to consumers. It would be like taking Need for speed off a game title.

...Yeah, they probably could have gotten away with taking it off the title. But why take the risk of losing some confused consumers?

Oh and that capital building thing...Very interesting.

U best be trollin'. Also, it really shocks me how much people think they know how a game is developed, but in actuality know so little.

Well hey, it won't be Modern Warfare if it wasn't Call of Duty.
