Capcom Scraps Mega Man Universe

Don't expect to see that crazy Mega Man mashup anytime soon... or ever.

Bummer news for Mega Man fans coming from Capcom this morning. According to a recent posting on the game’s official blogMega Man Universe has been cancelled. In addition to this announcement, the publisher also shot out a quick apology to those looking forward to the game’s once-impending Spring 2011 release across both XBLA and PSN.

Mega Man Universe was an updated take on the Mega Man formula that married user-created content to classic 2D Mega Man action. Capcom claimed that it was set to “deliver the most creative Mega Man experience yet” with MMU, allowing users to generate their own levels, create their own characters from prefab parts, and assign their own special weapons and items. There was also a touch of crossover appeal to the game--several classic Capcom characters such as Ryu and Sir Arthur were set to make an appearance in it.

The reason given for the cancellation of the project, according to an Andria Sang translation of the post, was “various circumstances.” One of those circumstances might have been the departure of Keiji Inafune, a creative lead on the project, but we'll probably never know for sure why Universe was cut.

It didn't look great anyway

Disappointing. This seemed like a really cool idea and it's too bad it fell through.

i was actually kinda looking forward to this. That pic of old schoolish mega man looked pretty rad.

Ah, what the hell! I was looking forward to this.

Awww, really? I was kinda looking forward to it...
MrKloroxon March 31, 2011 at 1:22 p.m.
At least Mega Man Legends 3DS is still in the pipes.

sad panda is sad
FateOfNeveron March 31, 2011 at 1:23 p.m.
That's disappointing.  The game could have actually been interesting, or maybe even just a decent start to something even better.  Oh well.
Undeadpoolon March 31, 2011 at 1:25 p.m.
I really hope Inafune and Mikami leaving forces Capcom to re-examine their development strategies.
Asadasa5on March 31, 2011 at 1:27 p.m.
Oh man, that sucks, I was really looking forward to MMU. The demo they had set up at comic con was pretty good, too.

@MrKlorox:

For now anyway.
TheHBKon March 31, 2011 at 1:32 p.m.
Never heard of it.

I was really looking forward to this. Dammit, Capcom.

Sad news.  It certainly had potential to be something really cool.
Both this and The Agency were announced to have been cancelled today.  COINCIDENCE?!
Yes.

I was definitely interested in this, but I'm not overly disappointed about it's cancellation. At any rate, could've been neat!
Kjellm87on March 31, 2011 at 1:42 p.m.
Can't say I was super excited for it, but it's too bad it got canned.
Also hey, my # 1000 post. Time for a new avatar.

I played it at NYCC.  I'm pretty good at the megamans, but this game had some pretty buggy controls.  It really need a lot more work.  I just hope legends 3 is still coming.  This is my main reason for buying the 3ds.

Well this is good news, better the 8-bit franchise to stay in lands of nostalgia or on handhelds then end up like bomberman with whatever it was with the disc game on the xbox360.

MisterMouseon March 31, 2011 at 1:50 p.m.
well that is a bummer... it seems like a very cool game.
