Giant Bomb Video Game News

Video Game News, Stories and Updates for the PS3, XBOX 360, PC, PSP, Wii, and DS

Added by Brad Shoemaker on April 2, 2009

Curve Studios--makers of Sony's big-in-Europe Buzz! series--has thrown off the quiz-game yoke and is working on a new side-scrolling action game called Explodemon! set to hit PlayStation Network, PC, and WiiWare this year. I'll lean toward the PSN version, because:

  • The DualShock 3 has an excellent d-pad
  • It will look better than those other platforms, and
  • I'm really digging the hottest new trend of 2009, "Games on the PlayStation 3 I want to play."

Here's the trailer. Looks a hell of a lot like a Mega Man game, no? Where have you been with a proper high-def rendition of the Blue Bomber, Capcom? Curve is beating you to the punch! Except their little robot dude is red.

Here's the Curve sales pitch.

Explodemon! is a 2.5D action platform game with an explosive main character. Mixing classic platforming action – from classics such as Mario and MegaMan – with the refined contemporary gameplay of Halo and Half-Life 2, it brings old-school gameplay bang up to date. Coming from Curve’s deep-seated love of video game culture and history, Explodemon! is wrapped up as a loving homage to SNES-era Japanese action games.

I'm all for homages, the Super NES, Mario, Mega Man, and even Halo and Half-Life (?!)--but guys, Western developers shouldn't spell out the names of their games in Katakana. It just looks weird, and your game seems pretty neat without it.

First thing I thought when I saw the character was Iron Man.

I wonder if Marvel is gonna sue them, probably not.

How do you even know they made different versions per platform for it to look better. And if they did, why the fuck would it look better on PS3 than PC? And lol @ the excellent d-pad. Maybe compared to the 360's...

Yes, I too thought "Iron Man?" but with a "for kids?" twist.

It will look better on my television than on my much smaller computer monitor, that's how.

"Use your imagination in the meantime"

Iunno about that one, imagination can be a dangerous thing.

im pretty sure its supposed to be read like EXplo-demon, not like exPLODE- eMON. think bomb-omb beast from hell, not anime electric mouse bomb. at the end of the trailer, the way they split it up by the exploding O in the graphic screams "DEMON" to me. i am much more inclined to like it if this is the naming convention.

Also, wasn't this an april fools gag? maybe that is why the trailer has disappeared from the 'netz...

I like having game names spelled in Katakana - I can read how to pronounce the name correctly. Without it, I could be saying ExlplodEEEEmon...

Agreed, Katakana looks weird from a western developer. I think the font of it just looks a bit too Windows-default-Japanese.
