That is NOT Merv Griffin.
That is NOT Merv Griffin.
THAT is Merv Griffin.
THAT is Merv Griffin.
Merv Griffin passed away in 2007, leaving behind a rich legacy in television. He hosted a very popular daytime talk show that started in the 1960s. He created both Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune. Aaaand I'm going to guess that very few you within eyeshot of these words have ever seen him or even heard of him. But one of the final things to launch from his huge television empire was Merv Griffin's Crosswords, another syndicated show that is currently in hiatus and there are rumors that it may not return.

I smell downloadable game magic here, friends. It's a game based on a probably-dead TV game show with the name of a definitely-dead guy on it. And it's based on doing crossword puzzles. How is that not a huge hit?

Anyway, the game has already hit the Wii, and now it's available as this week's surprise Xbox Live Arcade download. The crazy part is that even with all that going against it, I'm sort of intrigued. I do like crossword puzzles, especially when they're dumbed down for the purposes of, say, a game show. And I already made the stupid mistake of downloading last week's XBLA snoozer, Puzzle Arcade. How many more kitchen table activities can we turn into questionable XBLA games?

I remember Merv Griffin.  The Man With Two Brains.  Otherwise, no, but I'm not American.

I like crosswords, but in a game?  I don't know... I guess if the text is large enough, I might take a gander.  Otherwise, I'll hold out hope for Go Fish.

Bleh. Crosswords on the XBLA just don't sound so intriguing. If I am going to do one at all, I would much rather have the pen and paper type.

Is it any different than doing crossword puzzles on paper?  Meh, I don't do crossword puzzles, I'm saving them for when I'm an old fart.

It should've been more like the game show with five-player online competition. So much potential gone to waste...

I find it sad the most people my age who love entertainment don't bother to delve into the history of it.
Oh well. Go figure.

Puzzle games require using my brain. Using my brain gives me headaches.

Mindblowing. GameTek had better be involved or I'll be way disappointed.

I know nothing of him other then his old studio set of his show was the star of one of the funniest episodes of Seinfeld ever.

I'm not American, and so I know this gentleman from his role in The Man With Two Brains.  For that at least, I have fond memories.

If your a fan of crosswords Jeff then you should really pick up Crosswords DS. It's got 1,000s of crosswords, anagrams, and even word searches. It'll last you practically forever.
