Remember when there was going to be a Halo movie, with Peter Jackson executive-producing and his hand-picked director Neill Blomkamp at the helm? Most of you probably recall the tangled web that became the aborted film's production cycle, which mostly came down to ballooning budgets and other financial issues, but if you don't, here's the quick synopsis straight from the Wikipedia article.

In 2005, a script for a film adaptation of Halo was written by Alex Garland—which D. B. Weiss and Josh Olson rewrote during 2006—for a 2008 release. The movie was to be developed and released by 20th Century Fox, under the creative oversight of Microsoft. Peter Jackson was slated to be the executive producer, with Neill Blomkamp as director. Before Blomkamp signed on, Guillermo del Toro was in negotiations to direct. The crew has stopped and resumed preproduction of the film several times; while Blomkamp has declared the project dead, Jackson says the film will still be made.

Jackson and Blomkamp didn't part ways when Halo fell apart, though. Instead, they made a long-form version of the short film that got Blomkamp noticed in the first place, Alive in Joberg. The full trailer for that movie, District 9, was just released. So while it's not Halo, it's at least gives you some sense of the combined creative talents that would have brought Master Chief to the screen... or still might, if Jackson is right.

Just for the sake of comparison, here's a link to Alive in Joberg, which apparently impressed Jackson so much in the first place.

Do you think Halo will ever get made? Seems like a toss-up to me, at this point.

I hope they make it.

Hmm. I think Halo is overrated quite a bit. But I like the story and could definitely see the movie making sense.

Hmmmm... I don't know... Looks decent enough I guess.
Still want a Halo movie thought, with Samuel L. Jackson as Sergeant Johnson.

I've not heard the name Neill Blomkamp or Alive in Joberg since Rich Gallup said it years ago, On The Spot.

Well this looks awesome, but....this might sound weird but I really wanted a Halo movie, it could have been so AWESOME

I dont care about all the haters, I want a freaking HALO movie, I really hope that they still make one

Seriously, it would be stupid not to

0 % chance of Halo movie.  The franchise is on a downslope.  That new Halo: CYS  or Halo: GBA or w/e better be really good for it to have a chance.

This looks like a more interesting project than whatever the Halo movie would have likely ended up being.

Yea, this looks like a better movie than a Halo movie would be. Maybe it's just because I thoroughly enjoy new movies that deal with aliens/monsters taking over the world. Not sure if that alien looks very convincing though. And what's up with the pixelated face? Are they trying to pull a Cloverfield and "hide" the monster until the movie is released? It doesn't work that well when you can get the general idea of what it looks like anyways.

This movie looks pretty interesting. I'm sort of glad that the Halo movie got replaced with this.

I'd love to see the Halo movie happen.
I have no idea whether it will or it won't really.

I'm much more interested in D9 than in a potential Halo movie.  Then again, I'm not a fan of the games.

looks like it'll be really good, enjoyed the tetra vaal and joburg films, looking forward to this :D

@plagueseason as it's shot like a documentary that's the reason for the pixelated faces, as you often see pixelated faces in documentaries when journalists in some cases choose to protect the identity of those they're filming

I'd much rather see a completely new sci-fi IP than some dumb action-flick spinoff set in the Halo universe.

This is cliche in so many ways. It may be interesting, but its just an extended edition of the short film he made earlier, which worked, as a short film. Other than the mothership and what not, it looks like a school project someone is making.

Man, this looks like one of those movies that will either be a breath of fresh air , AKA Moon, or low budget Sci Fi. I hope its the former.

I wonder if this movie will get many screens in the US because it's directed by an unknown. Then again, the Peter Jackson name should help with PR.

I think everyone involved in the Halo project is sick of it by now.  Start.  Stop.  Start.  Stop.

If I were Jackson, I'd probably detest the whole idea by now.

I think they should just completely change the story for the movie. Hugo Weaving as Master Chief. He can recreate his long "V for Vendetta" monologues with a Covenant twist while Angelina Jolie, playing Cortana, looks on with her lips pursed and a bit of sideboob.

Now that movie has potential :p
