Those of you who play games on your iPhones may be interested to know that Doom Resurrection, a shall-we-say "reduced" version of id's classic corridor shooter, is on the App Store today. I can't say anything other than the "Doom" name catches my eye about this one, because it's not much of a Doom game that doesn't let you walk wherever you want.

id's John Carmack more diplomatically refers to Resurrection as a "guided experience," which isn't nearly enough to get me to pony up the $9.99 to try it. Who's taking the plunge? Most curiously, I've heard the game runs way more smoothly on the 3GS than the 3G or iPod Touch. Anyone have commentary on that situation?

Aftfer finding out that this was a guided experience, I kind of lost interest in the game. However, I've heard good things about it from people who have already bought it, even on the 3G (though appearently the framerate is nearly a flat 60 on the 3GS compared to more like 20-30 on the 3G).

Is it free?

So I'm gonna take a guess that this will not run on the original iPhone.

I'm going to end up keeping the money in my pocket, I dont think spending $10 on a "guided experience" is a novel idea. To tell the truth, this looks more like a tech demo of the 3GS's power than a true testament to the name of Doom.

I'm interested in what it's like, but, 10 dollar apps definitely need a Lite version to try out.

I agree. I can't pay for any apps over 1$ without trying a Lite version. It's too easy for me to dislike iPhone games (mainly because of controls), so they should provide LITE's for all the 10$ titles.

Looks like it's what Doom III would have been if it was a Nintendo 64 game. That was made by people who had never played Doom before.

Hmm. I'm tempted to get this one, if only to see it on the 3GS. I generally don't play first person shooters on the iphone, as i'm not keen on using on screen analog sticks. So this actually seems pretty good to me. I think i'll probably wait and see if they reduce the price or release a lite version.

I have played Doom on too many platforms for this severely gimped version to be worth it.

Is it just me or is the frame rate in that trailer truly hideous?

When you consider that portable games on the PSP and DS are 20 to 35 bucks, then its not unreasonable to pay 10 bucks.  We have rail shooters like House of the Dead.

Railshooters aren't worth playing without a lightgun in my opinion.

Read the article before posting, instead of just watching the video.

So... it's a rail shooter with no light gun and a chunky framerate?  That looks pretty atrocious to me.

I downloaded it earlier and have played a couple levels of it on my 2G iPod Touch, I'm really enjoying so far. i think it was definitely worth the £5.99

I'll just stick with Doom RPG and wait for Doom RPG 2 if I want Doom on the go.

Does anyone else notice the fact that the DOOM 3 theme song sounds suspiciously like a certain famous Tool song? I.E. Lateralus....   same beat, same notes, same tempo. Come the fuck on!

Im conflicted.  That impressed me that it was on a phone, and yet the graphics kinda sucked, but it was on a fucking phone!  Not buying a Iphone, never going to buy that game, but hey, im kinda impressed.
