ESPN and Microsoft Ink Deal That Brings Sports To Xbox Live

Watch ESPN3 if your ISP provides it!

Microsoft didn't announce a partnership with Hulu during its E3 2010 press briefing as rumors suggested, but it did reveal a partnership with ESPN that will bring on-demand NCAA, NBA, MLB and soccer sporting events to Xbox Live.

The look at the new sports-themed channel wasn't brisk at the briefing, but it didn't dive into the service's possible per-show cost or reveal how up-to-the-minute the broadcasts would be (see update). However, it was said that the service's wrapper is set to be free for Xbox Live Gold members and will provide around 3,500 sporting events to users.

Here's the announcement trailer created by ESPN for the upcoming partnership:

ESPN Is Coming To Xbox 360

We're just two regular famous sportscasters who are totally playing video games!

Kinect voice functionality, which includes rewind and pausing, will be supported alongside show-themed trivia and polls.

UPDATE: This reveal was a bit...light on the details. According to Destructoid, this deal essentially brings ESPN3 to the Xbox 360. This means that you'll only be able to get the content of this channel if your ISP includes ESPN3. Engadget has the full list of participating providers.

Hulu would have been awesome

But baseball on my Xbox for free? I'll take it :)

Sad there's no Hulu.. :(

but we got sports... cool...

It's pretty cool how Gold members don't have to pay anything extra. This is a good way to get Silver members to make the upgrade.

I am super excited for this.  Looks like ESPN 360 for XBox 360, which I would use so much.

Doesn't seem like it would have a per-show cost.  Seems more like EPSN 3/60 made to run on a xbox.  Up-to-the-minute stuff is shown on ESPN 3/60, so I would assume it would be here too.

Great but I'll be busy playing video games instead of watching real life games.
Meatsimon June 14, 2010 at 1:30 p.m.
This is cool now I will never need digital cable.

ESPN, I wonder if this for EU as well
nintendmoeon June 14, 2010 at 1:32 p.m.
Everything aout this looks cool so it sucks that it will only be applicable to the US. Would have seriously considered buying a 360 for this
Crono11on June 14, 2010 at 1:32 p.m.
I got excited but then I remembered that I won't be able to use this since I'm in Canada.

thats what I was thinking. I just think it will be so cool to use Kinect to watch sports and not have to change the channel.

"possible per-show cost" No thanks. I was interested until then.

Finally, people can shout at their TVs when sports are on and the xbox will be able to react.

doubt it , licensing for all of this would be vastly different for europe.

Glad this is included with Gold.  Makes paying for it feel easier.

No Hockey? Don't care.

Then again I'm in Canada and I'm sure they have no plans on bringing this outside of the US.

Still kinda cool though.
icanswimon June 14, 2010 at 1:36 p.m.
I'm assuming this is just going to be an extension of the espn3 platform Espn has been investing in. Also I'm fairly certain they said it would be free for Gold subscribers, so likely won't be available to silver. Though for ~30 dollars a year it could let some folks drop their cable subscription.
churrificon June 14, 2010 at 1:36 p.m.
Was there any mention of whether or not you need to be a customer of an affiliated cable/satellite provider to get this service? (i.e. kind of like how you need to have Comcast in order to watch ESPN3 for streaming World Cup matches).
soralapioon June 14, 2010 at 1:37 p.m.
Right, considering there's no chance in hell of this actually coming to Europe, let alone Finland, does anyone know if I can use my horrible socialist money to buy a red-blooded American Gold subscription? Because I'd totally pay for that just to see ESPN.
