Giant Bomb Video Game News

Video Game News, Stories and Updates for the PS3, XBOX 360, PC, PSP, Wii, and DS

Added by Dave Snider on April 10, 2009

I was ego surfing Giant Bomb on twitter a couple minutes ago and came across some cool graphs that Ben Medler, a Georgia-Tech PhD student, made with the site's  user review data. Using our API services he's come up with summaries of everything from average scores of prolific writers to which games get reviewed the most, but scored the worst. Apparently the answer to that last question is Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

I won't get preachy on my soapbox again but this is just another example of why it's important for community sites like ours to open up their data. Data shouldn't be locked in black-boxes only usable by a select few. You guys have just as many cool ideas for it as we do. It's nice to see it in action.

In any case, we love spot-lighting our users' work so if you're working on anything fun with our API please let us know by email if you need any help. Our engineering mastermind Andy is constantly updating it to include more and more filters, toggles, sorts and thingamabobs.

Make sure to check out Ben's blog for more cool graphs.

Strange... Monkey Island is no where to be seen on that list!

This is a very interesting list. Most of the games up there are pretty obvious though.

Ass Creed Pissed me off more than any game I've veer played and because of that it is the worst game I have ever played. I have never got so frustrated or angry trying to play a game like I did with Ass Creed like how it would take you outta the simulation just to make you go to sleep....... why? All you did was take me out of playing the game to make mr walk over to a bed to go to sleep to only have to go back into the game.

Whoops read that wrong, it does mention that the graph only looks at the top reviewed games but with lower scores.

In addition, there are 44 games with a score of 0, so I suggest you check out some of those :)

Oh wait, Disney’s Talespin is  at 0, what the hell.

Those are some pretty interesting graphs that guy made and lets us see even more of what people like and dislike in their games.

How did GoW2 get better reviews than Fable 2?  That's... that's just crazy.

@GioVANNI

Uhh...no, it's not?

Anyway, I don't know what possessed this guy to make these graphs but sure, whatever.

Interesting. Maybe I'm missing a small sliver that can't be seen by the human eye, but it doesn't look like The Force Unleashed earned any 5-star reviews. And top reviewer zh666 uses the full review scale, with an average review score of 2.5.
This is the kind of stuff I like to see. :)

Graphs, my one and only weakness.  Damn you, Snide!

@Milkman He was just curious to see what kind of information he could gleam from looking at broad statistics. The whole poit of information visualization is to look for trends/results/dynamics in the display of data.

Bioshock? Well that's a shock.

The pun... wasn't intentional.

Just looking at it, it looks like MGS4, Braid, and Super Mario Galaxy are the best reviewed games on the site.
