Here's What Resident Evil 4 Looks Like On The iPad

Real video games!

If you haven't heard yet, the brave adventurous lads over at Tested were busy tearing apart Apple's latest must-have device the iPad over the weekend. All well and good if you want to see the silicon guts of yet another obscenely priced doohickey (and you do, right?), but what if you just wanted to see some games on the thing? Not talking Trism or Mafia Wars here. Real video games.

Here's Capcom's first stab at iPad gaming: Resident Evil 4. Perhaps you've heard of it.

Predictably, this just looks like a slightly enhanced version of the existing iPhone version, though Capcom touts these features as being upgraded over that one. Still doesn't exactly sound (or look) like it reaches parity with the console originals though.

  • High-resolution graphics optimized for the iPad’s larger display.
  • “Visual Pad” control system makes gameplay a fluid and intuitive experience. Players can engage in running gun fights against crowds of enemies, climb ladders, equip binoculars and jump out windows.
  • 3rd person perspective camera for a panoramic view of the action.
  • Shake the iPad to reload.
  • Play through “Story Mode” to unlock ”Mercenary Mode”, a separate game mode with pre-set goals, weapons and conditions.
  • “Coin Shoot” shooting gallery mode where the where the goal is to destroy as many blue coins as possible within the time limit.
  • A total of five difficulty levels: “Beginner”, ”Normal”, ”Professional”, ”Hell” and “Extreme”

I hear that onscreen control business is the same technique being used in the new iPad version of Geometry Wars as well. Can an iPad-upgraded version of Street Fighter IV be far behind?

I was in an Apple Store over the weekend that had stacks of the thing sitting behind the counter, which made me stop and think for roughly 2.478634 seconds about throwing down and leaving with one. But since I already own a MacBook and an iPhone, I realized there aren't enough turtlenecks hanging in my closet to justify yet another Apple product. Who among you did take the plunge with an iPad this weekend, and who bought some games on it? How's the experience holding up for you so far?

Hey, while we're still sort of loosely talking about Resident Evil (and while I'm rambling), take a look at the trailer for the next RE flick that came out of Wondercon this past weekend.

Supposedly Mirror's Edge for the iPad is actually really good. Having neither a MacBook or an iPhone, this is slightly enticing...hmmm....

The Resident Evil franchise is just being butcherd

This actually looks kinda cool. Just saying.

I wasn't told there would be fresh Resident Evil footage.

Oh lord, it's in 3d, with unnecessary objects flying at the screen.

(concerning the RE trailer) Really? they are advertising a camera system? That is their hook... not directed by the man that brought you blah, blah, and blah, but a camera system. This movie is going to be awesome.
I have seen all the RE movies, but RE3D will be skipped. I make it a point not to support this 3d fad.

With the Resident Evil film franchise I can't help shaking the feeling that they're saving the worst for last.

Afterlife looks TERRIBLE.

Considering the iPad has only slightly upgraded specs over the iPhone, I'm personally not surprised that the game looks quite similar to it's iPhone counterpart.  There most likely won't be many games that can produce graphics of quality comparable to even a netbook.

Guess: the high resolution they are touting is probably them making the game run in the native resolution of the iPad instead of going the DS XL route and blowing up the same game.

This looks like garbage.  0 stars.
ooofafaon April 5, 2010 at 9:24 a.m.
so they stole the enemies from re5 and put the slut that was in the other movies with them. k
punkxblazeon April 5, 2010 at 9:24 a.m.
Clarification: RE4 iPad looks neato. Afterlife looks like shit and will probably be shit.

blocky...

Hmm not to confident about RE4 working with touch screen. I already have trouble moving around in FF on my iPhone.

Also how bad is it that I would rather see Afterlife than Avatar? Mindless zombie flick with massive plotholes GO!
I can see why RE fans would hate it though. Also this should mark the return of TANG.

Haven't there been enough RE4 ports already??
agentboolenon April 5, 2010 at 9:35 a.m.
WHY CAN'T THEY JUST MAKE A PSP PORT OF RE 4!!!!!  WHYYYYYYYY!!!!!
Hitchensonon April 5, 2010 at 9:44 a.m.
Who's going to play games on a iPad though? Fucking idiots that's who.
SPACETURTLEon April 5, 2010 at 9:50 a.m.
For a second there I thought it said guest apperance by James Cameron. And I was just thinking, can the Resident Evil franchise get any worse? Luckly Cameron himself dont have anything to do with Afterlife after all. The film is still gonna suck thou.

The Wii version of RE4 is the only version of RE4 as far as i'm concerned
rpgobjectson April 5, 2010 at 9:51 a.m.
When the iPad cost about $250, I will probably grab one assuming there are some good games on it.   I don't have a ps3, and it's cheaper than this big iPod, that has a lot more to offer me gaming wise.   If it was something I could actually do work on as well and replace my labtop, it might be another story.

With Resident Evil 4, Capcom overhauls the mechanics of its popular survival horror franchise with a simple perspective shift, creating one of the most lauded action games ever made. It introduces more formidable enemies, improved shooting mechanics, better graphics, and incredibly atmospheric gameplay.
