Irrational Asks, 'What Is Icarus?'

And I respond, "I dunno."

If Irrational Games' call for spoken speculation on the topic of Irrational Games' next game on popular message board NeoGAF wasn't enough to convince you that the studio is poised to reveal its latest in the near future, perhaps the fact that its asking the enthusiast press to hit a New York-based event in mid-August might. But if you're still skeptical, take a gander at this teaser Web site. It's a seemingly official creation whose URL includes the project name of Irrational's forthcoming game, "Icarus." One wouldn't drum up this anticipation for nothing, right? RIGHT?

The site, What is Icarus, begs the big question in its URL, but there is no answer--yet, at least. For now it's just a splash page with a decent-sized fleck and a sober message that springs forth if you gape at said mysterious fleck for far too long.

As Joystiq points out, the domain registration of the site doesn't reveal an Irrational connection. It should be noted though that the site's URL and its nameservers, which are mapped to Take-Two and Rockstar Games, point towards this page being real deal.

So, what is Icarus? We'll know soon enough, be it from a far more overt webpage tease fans consume and puzzle out, or as a result of the event on August 11. In the meantime, though, what do you believe Irrational is working on? Will it be something we'll readily be able to associate with Irrational? That is to say, will it be something that builds on the atmospheric and RPG-light mechanics the studio has fiddled with for so long?

@Blair:

Hahahaha. I apologize. But it's the only way . . . . :P It'll never happen again. I can assure you.

@astrotriforce: I got it on a quick look by typing in actual words. So it isn't the only way. Congrats anyways.

On topic: I have no clue what this game is gonna be.

Clearly Nintendo sold part of the rights to Kid Icarus and this is an origins story.

Kid Icarus: Origins.

Whatever this game is it should have a commentary track by Shawn Elliot.

That tagline is excellent. "And I respond 'I dunno'."

Icarus is the dumbest person in all of Greek Mythology.

@crusader8463: What other game?
JasonNelsonon July 28, 2010 at 10:55 a.m.
What sober message is he talking about? I stared at that thing for a minute or 2 and didn't see anything.
crusader8463on July 28, 2010 at 11:05 a.m.
@buzz_killington:  I got them mixed up with a different developer. = (

If I were them I would make 'Skyshock', about a Bespin-esque city in the clouds.  I have said this before, and 'Icarus' doesn't exactly make me want to change my mind.  Of course, it will probably be something totally different.

Icarus is a third, up-to-now unknown adversary of Andrew Ryan who advocated for a return to polytheism.

Irrational are one of those companies that I can be fairly sure that whatever they make will be quality stuff.  I just hope it's not god damn Kid Icarus.
astrotriforceon July 28, 2010 at 11:58 a.m.
@Tactical_Kill:
Sure it's not the only way but to guarantee you'll get it over others I'd say it is. Since most people just type "first" or "cool" or whatnot. But thanks. :) It made the rest of my day working easier. Haha.
