UPDATE: Here's the cover in question.
UPDATE: Here's the cover in question.
Most of you guys know by now that we run a pretty awesome comic book site side by side with Giant Bomb. While you'd think that would make me really excited about crossovers from games into comics I really can't name many outside of the Dead Space series that were actually worth reading. That said I'm actually super curious about the Gears of War comic books that Wildstorm's been pumping out the last few months. I know I'm likely in the minority here but I'll honestly say I've enjoyed the Gears games more for their environment and world then their gameplay.

It seems that my curiosity for the series will have to finally be fulfilled now that Wildstorm head honcho Jim Lee plans on doing artwork for the covers starting with issue #9, due out in July. For those not into caped crusaders, Lee is essentially the artist in the industry and usually makes the comics he works on worth picking up even if the writing is complete garbage. The guy somehow even made that whole Batman Hush nonsense bearable. That said, I actually really enjoyed Brandon Bradeaux's work on the previous covers, which have been nothing short of epic for fans. I attached some of his art from the last couple issues.

What do you guys think of cross-overs from games into comics? Do they work, or do you see them more as a cash-in?

Not doing much for me. Then again I was never a video game comics fan to begin with....or a comics fan for that matter.

Meh. I really don't care about the story in Gears of War so I can't see any reason to read a Gears comic.

Gears dialogue:

Marcus:  These fucking aliens are fucked!
Dom:  Fucking right!
Cole: Fuck yeah!
Baird: I'm funny!

I read two of the Gears comics and I didn't really like them.  I felt like I was reading an ad saying "DUDE YEAH GEARS" the whole time.

9/10 its just a crappy cash in when they do it, but mathematically something good has to come of it at least once.

@Oni

I know. You think I'm a game snob with my RPG tastes, wait till I start talking about comics!

Hush *was* nonsense, just like most/all of Jeph Loeb's work.

Jim Lee on Gears of War... eh, that's sorta disappointing if you think about it. I mean, Gears of War is just about a bunch of big burly men in bulky armor, and while Lee is certainly capable of drawing that really well... he's usually best at drawing amazingly gorgeous women. In very revealing attire. Just don't think GoW has much of that. GoW doesn't have much of a story either, but uh, c'est la vie.

If done right a comic book can flesh out the story of universe by leaps and bounds. The most recent one that comes to memory is the dead space books. Those were great in every aspect. Epic created a universe with a lot of potential but have wasted most of that potential by focusing all the effort on mindless killing gameplay which is NOT bad but the games could have been so much richer in story content. Hopefully the comics will portray the universe as it deserves to be portrayed.

I demand a cover depicting a chainsaw duel.

I think they can because Video Games have a certain level of ridiculousness similar to what comics have.

Gears of War is the first game-crossover i've read and I really like it because it has the same style as the game.

Wait, there's a Gears of War comic?

Wait, there's a Gears of War story?

Didn't the story of the second game basically boil down to
"Shit the locust are trying to sink the city let's stop them"
"Wait, sinking the city has somehow become a good idea, let's go do that"
with a slight side-story of Dom "I'm looking for my wife"

I can't imagine Lee is doing this because of the fantastic Gears story, I'd bet he's just trying to pay the bills which is fair enough really.
