Midway Newcastle Reveals Necessary Force

The only catch is that if you want to play it, you'll have to hope that someone comes through and buys the studio.

It looks like today is the day that Midway Newcastle has put out the "hey, someone come buy us" call to the public. With Warner Bros. looking to gain control of most of the other parts of Midway, it looks like the studios who aren't on the Warner list are sort of having to fend for themselves and drum up a little business on their own. I heard that some of the Midway San Diego crew was looking to conduct business during E3, and now Newcastle is visibly on the hunt, too.

The tale is told in at least two places. The Guardian has some inside word and interviews from within the former Pitbull Syndicate, and it's a good read. Via Kotaku, I also saw this article at Develop, which reveals the new game that Midway Newcastle has been working on, Necessary Force. Both pieces are worth reading if you're interested in hearing about what sounds like an increasingly dire financial situation coupled with a team that seems to be keeping its chin up amidst all the chaos.

Here's the initial trailer for the game:

It sounds like these guys have until the end of the month to find a buyer. Obviously, the world economy isn't making that process easy. But it sounds like doing a big open-world game with Unreal Engine 3 is a tricky technical feat, so if this game is pulling that off and looking right, hopefully someone will step in and save some jobs.

I like the art style, I hope the gameplay is just as good!

Midway, you can do this.

looks like an intresting premise, lets hope someone can buy them and follow this game through.

As a fan of midway- and a proud geordie it is my duty to find someone able to buy this and hold them at gunpoint until the transaction is complete

not really digging the art style but this does show promise.

Looks very Max Payne, they even have the snow at the end.

I hope they find a buyer. That trailer looked fairly cool and interesting. Still not enitrely sure what the game would be like, but I liked the style and art of the graphics. It could end up being totally stupid and generic, but I hope they get a buyer. No one in the whole Midway stuff deserves to lose their job.  :)

Oh, and what has Midway Newcastle worked on before?

EDIT: Oh,  they worked on Wheelman, a generic action title...

Trailer looks good, better then I expected. I hope they find a buyer because it's always sad to see people have to lose their jobs.

It looks like what would happen if Max Payne and The Punisher had a baby.
Vod_Crackon June 16, 2009 at 2:19 p.m.
That looked pretty cool. Wheelman was a decent game but I hope they can put more effort into this game if all goes well.

Haha, Midway Newcastle in trouble? Sounds like another job for Alan Shearer then... :D (joke for anyone who watches english Premiership football)

That looks like it has potential. I'd buy that for a dollar!

You beat me to it. I was just about to make a similar joke!!!!!!!!!

@OmarStyles9: Too bad both Newcastle and Midway r already relegated.
cstrangon June 16, 2009 at 2:26 p.m.
Meh...  I can't remember the last time Midway put out a decent game.  It looks like a typical noir story, but with strangely cartoony looking in-game characters.  If this game doesn't get made, I won't lose sleep.

Marv from Sin City meets Max Payne

Max Payne much???

Dig Deeper into Necessary Force

Necessary Force was the last title that Midway Newcastle worked on before the studio's closure on July 2009. It was set to be a Tech Noir-styled open world adventure where you played a detective who would solve crimes and generally clean up the fictional city.
