Giant Bomb Video Game News

Video Game News, Stories and Updates for the PS3, XBOX 360, PC, PSP, Wii, and DS

Mirror's Edge developer DICE announced its downloadable content plans for its ambitious-but-flawed first-person parkour game today, which will feature seven brand-new time-trial maps. I definitely had my issues with the execution in Mirror's Edge, but the time trials best distilled the game's strengths by focusing more on moving fluidly and quickly through the environments, and by eliminating the combat completely. As you can see from this totally insane video that DICE released alongside the announcement, it's taking the abstraction even further, replacing the rooftops and corridors that comprised the world of Mirror's Edge with something far more stylized. I'm reminded of Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions by way of the secret stages from Super Mario Sunshine, except, you know, everything's all glowy and white.

As part of this announcement, DICE has confirmed that the PC version of Mirror's Edge will ship on January 13th in the US, and January 16th worldwide. The time-trial pack will be available for all three versions of Mirror's Edge sometime in late January for a price of $10. On top of all this, the PlayStation Blog is reporting that there will be a free, PS3-exclusive time-trial map released alongside the premium pack. $10 for seven maps seems a little steep, but I think it's awesome that DICE has taken the clean, high-contrast look of the game to its logical conclusion.

Nice, this is where this games strength lies to be honest - take it out of the story and focus on the working mechanic

Very awesome. I'm looking forward to diving back into that game.

This looks amazing. I'm really, really interested in playing this and my only concern is that it's a hefy amount of content for so much. But these levels are totally unexpected and I'm certainly excited.

Also why are you even bringing up the combat for a time-trial pack? Time trials are clearly Mirror Edge's replay value, even on the original disc, and none of those feature combat.

It looks very nice.  Once I get ME, I'm definitely downloading these.

I think this is genius business and creative decision. BRAVO!!!! It's probably super cheap to make and it ties to the games style perfectly. I haven't played the game itself but I have a feeling the DLC may be better than the original game.

Wow, this is unexpected and awesome. Kind of hints at a Portal-esque potential. Only with less of a value proposition...

I'll probably end up buying it, but fuck me if 800 points aint too much to pay for this shit.

That looked really awesome more as a bit of abstract graphical design then actual playable maps.

Heh, if they just pack this in with the game for free, I might buy it.

I gotta' say that it's bullshit that the people on the PS3 get an extra map for free when I payed just as much as they did for my copy of the game.

Not impressed. However the music still slays.

I have to admit that does look pretty cool. Unfortunately, the game doesn't play nearly as smooth as those videos show.

800 points for seven time trial tracks is fucking bullshit. ESPECIALLY tracks they were too lazy to even render in to the city.

Now why wasn't this an unlockable at the end of the game?....
