"Santa Monica Studios had the brilliant idea to upgrade and improve God of War for PS3 with the God of War Collection that we released last year," Yoshida told IGN. "There were a lot of positive reactions from consumers in doing that, and now we get a lot of suggestions for types of packs they'd like to see. So, we are looking to continue to do these HD conversions."

Despite some cut-scene oddities and relative age of the source material, the God of War Collection won over a fair few critics with its blazing framerate, 720p presentation, and jaggy removal. Perhaps the newly announced Sly Cooper Collection, the latest of these HD collections, will do the same.
Regardless of quality, it looks like more PS2 collections are on the horizon, making that long-rumored ICO and Shadow of Colossus HD remake collection that much more believable. Not that you wanted to grip a freaky girl's chilly or beat shadow monsters with tree branches in HD, am I right? Besides, Volition's Summoner franchise should be next in line anyway, based on the fact that I want it really, really bad.

In a parting blast, IGN asked Yoshida if we might get these titles as PSN digital downloads. The man didn't confirm or deny, but he didn't seem too high on the idea, either. Not as high as he was about packaged disc versions of these HD collections, at least.

It's pretty much impossible to know if this was the reasoning, we can only speculate.
Although, the God of War collection wasn't just emulating the ps2 games. They were rebuilt in order to take advantage of the new hardware to an extent. They are more like enhanced copies of the game rather than just popping in the original ps2 disc.
Honestly, if people can pony up for what capcom incrementally released as far as SSF4 goes, then a full high def upscaling, new features, network and trophy support addition for ps2 games should also be a fully reasonable purchase, for the right price of course.
Sure they could've left ps2 support in there - but if you own ps2 games, you own a ps2 - go play it.
I would much rather pay a smaller than full price fee for 'better' versions of games i love, than rely on bad screen stretched upscaling from ps2 discs and not full compatibility.
damn.
Nah they dropped PS2 support for the Slim as a way of costcutting- they essentially had a PS2 in there with earlier models solely for BC- removing it saved them space and money, allowing for the Slim to drop in price.
BC is a feature few people outside the hardcore even use anyway, so it was a pragmatic decision.
Might be fake though.
I would too! Please Sony please don't disappoint us.
