Despite whatever business realities Midway seems to be going through these days, it sounds like the Mortal Kombat train is going to keep right on trucking. Midway announced this morning that 2008's Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe has shipped 1.8 million copies into stores. That's a worldwide number that combines both the 360 and PS3 releases of the game.

Of course, that's an "into the channel" sort of number that reflects the number sent out to retail, as opposed to the number actually purchased. But the company offered up another number, claiming that as of January 13, over 3.6 million online matches have gone down on the PlayStation 3 alone. That's a lot of "get over heres."

But the exciting part of this press release comes in a quote from series co-creator, Ed Boon. Here, check it:

"Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was the result of countless hours of hard work by many people, and seeing the game surpass the million-seller plateau makes it worth all the effort," said Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat co-founder and creative director, Midway. "We're already hard at work on our next version of Mortal Kombat, and look forward to being able to reveal more details in the future."

There you have it, further confirmation that Mortal Kombat 9 is in the works. I was curious to know if the work being done on the next MK game meant that we wouldn't see any downloadable content for MKvDC. So I checked in with Midway, who quickly got back to me and said that we shouldn't take the above statement to mean that there won't be any DLC for the current game, and that details on said DLC are forthcoming.
