Despite whatever business realities Midway seems to be going through these days, it sounds like the Mortal Kombat train is going to keep right on trucking. Midway announced this morning that 2008's Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe has shipped 1.8 million copies into stores. That's a worldwide number that combines both the 360 and PS3 releases of the game.

Of course, that's an "into the channel" sort of number that reflects the number sent out to retail, as opposed to the number actually purchased. But the company offered up another number, claiming that as of January 13, over 3.6 million online matches have gone down on the PlayStation 3 alone. That's a lot of "get over heres."

But the exciting part of this press release comes in a quote from series co-creator, Ed Boon. Here, check it:

"Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was the result of countless hours of hard work by many people, and seeing the game surpass the million-seller plateau makes it worth all the effort," said Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat co-founder and creative director, Midway. "We're already hard at work on our next version of Mortal Kombat, and look forward to being able to reveal more details in the future."

There you have it, further confirmation that Mortal Kombat 9 is in the works. I was curious to know if the work being done on the next MK game meant that we wouldn't see any downloadable content for MKvDC. So I checked in with Midway, who quickly got back to me and said that we shouldn't take the above statement to mean that there won't be any DLC for the current game, and that details on said DLC are forthcoming.

Long live MK once and future Fighter Game!  Now if this forces or convinces another Marvel vs Capcom game in the style of SF 4 that would rock the casbar!

Good for them, looking forward to a MK game without comic book characters.

This is great news. I really enjoyed MK vs. DC, and am glad that they are working on DLC, as well as the next MK game. I was worried for a bit.

I'm looking forward to a new MK game as well.

Personally, I hope they make a sequel to MK vs DC, one with more characters, more levels and goddamn fatalities that are actually fatal. "M" rating would be a must.

Well, here's to hoping the next MK can be as violent as they want to be and not another Versus game... well, unless it's MK Versus Hanna Barbara. That would be fucking awesome.

Great news!  With all the noise surrounding Midway right now, it's good to know they're not afraid of starting some new projects.

MK v DC is something on my list of games to get. I've got a lot to play, and not enough time to play them all to the extent I would like to. But this one is on the list and hopefully I can get to it soon.

Good news for Midway.. maybe this will help them survive a little longer. Well, as longs as those shipped numbers at least transfer into a decent number of sales.

Agree, it's a piece of shit.

Why couldn't they just make a functional D-Pad? Is that too much to ask, Microsoft?
