Cosmic Smash - Squash isn't just for blue-bloods.
Cosmic Smash - Squash isn't just for blue-bloods.
Apparently ThinkGeek.com is currently selling brand new Sega Dreamcasts on its store. The system that spelled the death-knell for Sega hardware has always been tinged in romantic emotions for most players, so if you missed out the first time around or really don't trust eBay now is your chance. I remember picking up mine on 9/9/99 while waiting in line at a Babbage's in some mall in Maryland. I later lost a full summer of my life playing Virtua Tennis, ChuChu Rocket, and Power Stone for hours on end.

While I doubt the machine's 56k modem and web browser disc will get much use (though please send us a screenshot if you can load up Giant Bomb on it), there are still a lot of classic titles that I'd recommend checking out if you missed the era. Jeff chimed in over IM to recommend that if you're looking to get the full benefit of this North American Dreamcast you can grab an import boot disc so you can play classic titles like Rez, Ikaruga and Cosmic Smash. Personally, I would highly recommend checking out the awesomely broken but ambitious game that is Omikron: The Nomad Soul, which was hyped at the time for having a digital David Bowie play some tunes in the game's local space-bar. Both the slightly better PC version and the DC version are hard to find though, so be wary. Here's the music video just for nostalgia's sake... and to show that marketing tricks like Korn recording a new song for Haze are soooo 1999.

I was a big fan of both Jet Grind Radio and Virtua Tennis. Also, NFL2K was the only football game that I ever liked. We used to play that into the ground. There was also Demolition Racer. That game got a ton of play. Skies of Arcadia is rad too. I could go on and on...

I don't know what's more bizarre - the fact that ThinkGeek is doing this, or that I'm probably going to buy one.

I'd be all over this if I hadn't bought one last year. To anyone that doesn't have one: BUY IT NOW!

I still have my Japanese console modded to play just about anything you could play on it.  It works fine and the only stupid thing is the squealing VMU when you turn the system on, but those thing always did that.

This is pretty sweet. You can get them new on amazon.com through third parties cheaper though.

How could you fail to mention the single most defining game of all time on the Dreamcast? I am speaking of course... of Seaman

I've got the Nomad soul, it was a freaky game but really cool. Once you got into that game you never came out of it. Digital David Bowie was the absolute highlight of the Dreamcast for me.
