Yes. Sold. LA looks exactly like Tokyo in the future.
Yes. Sold. LA looks exactly like Tokyo in the future.
** Update**: Be sure to check out the newest Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City, coming exclusively to the Xbox 360 October 29, 2009. It'll include both The Lost & Damned as well as the newer Ballad of Gay Tony.

There's plenty of of Grand Theft Auto content on the horizon with The Lost and Damned and China Town Wars, but how about a whole new game and location for the series? Rumors are flying about the next big installment in the series coming as early as the end of 2009. The newest issue of Game Informer apparently contains the following vague snippet between its pages:

We're not talking about new DLC or a collection of previously available DLC, we're talking about a full retail game. We expect this title to follow the suit of previous GTAs and use a subtitle such as GTA: San Andreas, etc. Tokyo might be a possible setting for the game, but details are non-existent at this time.

I personally haven't seen the issue, so I can't vouch for its validity or put it into more context, but if they're talking about a new GTA IV-style game, color me excited. Tokyo would be a great choice, though I wonder what time period would be best. Maybe it's time for Grand Theft Auto to head into the future so we can start having sex with prostitute replicants and throw them out of our hovercars to get our creds back.

Thanks to PSU for the tip.

I've been saying that for years. GTA: Blade Runner would be the greatest game ever made.
Hopefully they focus on content more than the color grey and the Euphoria engine this time around though.

I haven't started GTA IV yet. Still clocking Fallout 3 (104 hours into it now).

Eventually maybe Rockstar can expand on GTA IV like they did GTA 3 and add in some of the crazy stuff people want to see and go all out like they did with San Andreas.  It'll be interesting to see where they go from here.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them announce a new one due out Q4, but I'd be very surprised to see it come out this year. It'll get pushed back.

All I want to hear is "this has a story as good as GTA4" and I'm in.

I could care less about open worlds.  Sandboxes are boring.  Give me a compelling single player experience and I'm there.

GTA4 was the game that made 'sandbox' style games relevant to me, and I want more in that direction.

You seem to be under the assumption that everyone wants to see that. I beg to differ, good sir!

I don't give a damn where the next GTA is, just so long as they put planes in it.

I've wanted a GTA set in Tokyo. I always thought that would be cool. some other possible locations I would like to see would be:
  • Shanghai
  • London
  • Paris
  • Monaco
  • Italy
  • Hawaii

This makes me think of the blue screen scene in Wayne's World. "Or imagine, being magically whisped away to..."
But yeah, Toky-MFing-o.

It could happen. Vice City came out a year after GTA 3 and they already have the engine up and running so it wouldn't be hard to get another GTA out in a little over a year.

Let's just get out of the USA for the next GTA. If they do Vice City take two, I will lose a lot of interest.

I'm rooting for GTA to move to Wichita.  Can you imagine the tagline?  "Become Joe Bob, scourge of corn fields, as he searches for love amongst his cousins!"  Ahhh, good old controversy.
