The face of rock.
The face of rock.
MTV's got a lot of high-powered details on Activision Blizzard's 2009 lineup. The info comes out of a showcase put on by Massive Inc., Microsoft's in-game ad firm. The show is, essentially, games being presented to potential advertisers. Guitar Hero 5, a new Tony Hawk game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and a new racing-focused James Bond game from Bizarre Creations were all mentioned.

Here's the awesome kicker from MTV's Patrick Klepek:

At the meeting, Activision Blizzard showcased new games that would make sense for in-game ads, including the vaguely titled “Guitar Hero 5,” which included a screen shot of gameplay with a Burger King ad to the right of the note highway.

Yeesh. This is, clearly, the right way to debut a new sequel. With a fat ad next to it. You'd think that Activision would release some sort of information to the press at the same time, if only to potentially avoid having product placement be the first thing people hear about your next big sequel.

The quote out of the event on the new Tony Hawk game is "you’re not going to be playing this game with a controller in your hands." This lends credence to all the skateboard peripheral rumors that have come up over the last few months. The developer of the new Tony Hawk wasn't mentioned, but I heard awhile back that it was being done by a company called Robomodo, which is a Chicago-based studio filled with ex-EA Chicago and ex-Midway people. Robomodo has since announced that it is working on a popular Activision franchise, but hasn't said which one. This tenth Tony Hawk game will be out in October on 360, PS3, Wii, and DS.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 shouldn't be too big of a surprise, but it certainly dials down all the sci-fi and Civil War rumors that have been surrounding Infinity Ward. That was given a fall release date.

The Bond-based driving game will be done by Bizarre Creations, which Activision picked up relatively recently. It'll be out in September and won't be tied to a movie. Does anyone remember how much mess Activision talked about the Bond games that EA made when it first picked up the license? So far we've had one lackluster first-person shooter and now they're taking a second crack at 007 Racing? Weird.

Be sure to check out MTV's story for more details.

People are going to get fucking hurt with this skateboard peripheral.

Also, didn't you call the separation, Jeff, a few months back, between the Call of Duty and Modern Warfare franchises?  A brilliant man, this Gerstmann is.

Nothing particularly surprising there. The new bond racing game wasn't something I was expecting, but it doesn't seem weird on that list either.

The secret twist is that Treyarch will be developing CoD MW2

They go from COD4 to CODMW2? That's confusing and it better be a work in progress title.

CoD: MW 2 next fall? Hmm, I hope they have been working on it since the first game, that would be dissapointing otherwise.

call of duty MW 2 - in a sci fi universe would totally suck....all the grittyness of CoD4 would be lost and  a civil war game.....that would suck even more - a game where it takes 4 minutes to reload lol??

I actually think Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is a great title for the game.

That's really pretty fucking bad that they felt that GH5 needed to have ads in the announcement screenshot.  They hire people to look at those things so this can't have just been an "oh shit there's an ad in the background" thing.  I've accepted that GH is going to have ads in every iteration now so the news doesn't suprise me but surely they could at least give us some details before they start shoving the advertising in our faces.  Weird

I'm actually kinda hoping that the next CoD game will be slightly futuristic.  Maybe borrow some of the guns that Ghost Recon uses.  Still another Infinity Ward quality game will be awesome after World At War

Exciting stuff, although Modern Warfare 2 has me particularly intrigued.

Am I the only one who isn't bothered by ads? Honestly, I think being able to play as the King would be kinda funny.

"you’re not going to be playing this game with a controller in your hands."

I thought BMX XXX wasn't the way to go with extreme sports games?

and there goes any excitement I had for the next Infinity Ward, Call of Duty.

the ads don't really bother me in the slightest

Well, I was totally looking forward to the news on the upcoming Tony Hawk. Now that I've read it doesn't use a controller and it might not even be made by Neversoft, I'm just going to lower my head in shame and cry a little.
