Ninja Theory Is Definitely Developing A New Devil May Cry

The Heavenly Sword people are taking the reins of Capcom's hallowed character action series.

 ...Dante?

Rumors of Heavenly Sword creator Ninja Theory's involvement with a new game in the Devil May Cry series have been swirling for some time, and they only got louder when Capcom trademarked a new DMC game yesterday afternoon. Thankfully, all the speculation was finally proven true this morning during Capcom's TGS 2010 press conference, as the publisher and Ninja Theory confirmed that the two studios are indeed working on a new installment in the series--a new installment simply called Devil May Cry.

Whether this fresh DMC is a sequel, spin-off, or a prequel is still being left up in the air. The younger, leaner, and much more hip-looking Dante gives off the kind of vibe we'd expect from the latter, but Ninja Theory and Capcom aren't billing it as such. Instead, it's being suggested that it's a reboot for the franchise. Here's specifically what Capcom has to say about the new game.

Set against a contemporary backdrop, DmC will depict a duplicitous world where nothing is ever as it seems and the line between good and evil is constantly blurred. Spurred into action by the promises of a trusted relation, Dante bursts into this world intent on revenge at any cost. DmC will retain the series’ signature mix of sword and gunplay but add additional weapons, all new powers and a revitalised gameplay system as players encounter the game’s devilish mix of enemies and navigate the rich, interactive environment.

That doesn't necessarily mean the wheel is being reinvented here. The games' characteristic mix of sword and gun combat will be present and accounted for in this latest DMC, according to GamePro. The below footage backs that up and also introduces a neat narrative monkey-wrench.
