Video Game News, Stories and Updates for the PS3, XBOX 360, PC, PSP, Wii, and DS

A brief post over on Obsidian Entertainment's official forums delivers the unsurprising but nonetheless disappointing news that the developer is no longer working on the Aliens role-playing game it was working on for Sega. Strife had been rumored in relation to the game's development for some time.

What could have been?
What could have been?

Obsidian's got Alpha Protocol and the next Fallout game, New Vegas, in the pipeline, so they ought to be fine as a studio for the moment, at least. But I was really looking forward to seeing a style of game set in the Aliens universe other than a first-person shooter. Sad news indeed.

Gearbox's shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines was recently confirmed to still be in production. We hit up Sega for comment on this development, so stay tuned. (NOTE: Our headline originally referred to the game as "canceled," though Obsidian's post doesn't actually address the general status of the project.)

UPDATE: OK, the game is in fact fully dead. Sega just issued the following statement.

At this point, SEGA has no plans to move forward with the Aliens RPG. The Aliens franchise offers us so much content to choose from that we feel it important to take a step back and carefully consider the type of game we want to release. We plan to continue working with the Aliens franchise and ask fans to be patient and stay tuned for more information about what SEGA has coming out for the Aliens series of games, starting with the upcoming Alien vs. Predator game.  We are very excited about and focused on Alien vs. Predator, which promises gamers a fantastic single player game and an equally compelling multiplayer experience. We are confident that it provides all the excitement and fun that the Aliens and Predator fans are looking for!

NOOOOO!!!!  This saddens me greatly.  I mean...it's...it's ALIENS!  Why the FUCK is it that the Alien franchise is soooooo doomed in video games?

Hopefully, SOMEONE will make an RPG out of Alien, Aliens, or whatever.  Nonetheless, we've still got AvP to look forward to!

Doh. I'm with Brad, I would have loved to see a new take on the franchise that wasn't a shooter, but at least Obsidian still seems to have it's plate full. I wonder if we'll get more story on what happened or how far along the games was.

I knew it was going to happen, so no big surprise. But definitely could've been an interesting game.

@jakob187: Which AvP? That's all I have left to look forward to, will it be anything like the old one from years ago?

I'm starting to think this is just a running joke in the games industry.

"Oh, we're working on an Alien Dating Sim"  *wink wink*

Wasn't there some kinda Aliens or AVP RTS? Or do you not count AVP as Aliens?

can't say that i am that sad about this. their work on KOTOR 2 was an unmitigated technical disaster. i would go through whole dialogue sequences where i couldn't even read the text on the screen but then had to answer the question. made for really disappointing game play. not to mention the fact that the ending was one of the worst in recent memory for a game.

For fucks sake, this is complete bullshit, first the DS game now this? For once why the fuck cant we get a movie franchise game that actually makes sense as a videogame?! What the fuck is wrong with developers/publishers?! SERIOUSLY?!?! This makes me so fucking angry it's unbelievable, so now, at best we will get a generic FPS game, well thats just fucking fantastic.

Fuck you whoeever is responsible, fuck you so much.

I was always more excited for Alpha Protocol anyway and that's looking to be a great game so no biggie.

I thought this was already canceled...

But yeah, it could've been cool. I hope Alpha Protocol is good, it looks really promising.
