Playboy Announces New Game Label And Reveals Its First Game

Yeah, the game has boobs in it.

Playboy knows boobs will never get old, regardless of medium. But it hasn't been behind the wheel of a videogame just yet. That's about to change this year, as Playboy magazine has announced plans to launch its own games label. It has also revealed a partnership with Bigpoint Games, an MMOG distributor, as well as the first fruits of the budding relationship, a Grand Theft Auto knock-off called Poisonville.

Playboy has become rather active in our little neck of the woods of late. 2K Games' Mafia II prominently features in-game Playboy magazines that you can view at your leisure. Capcom's upcoming Dead Rising 2 has magazines as well, though they have more of a utilitarian purpose as they provide stat boosts similar to the books in the original Dead Rising

Consider these appearances first steps to the full-on sponsorship that has been revealed today. But don't necessarily believe this is Playboy''s expression of a passion to make solid games. The Playboy marketing gurus coolly remind us in the announcement press release that this new label is all about "meeting the needs" the magazine's demographic based on feedback received.

I think this is where you buy guns in Poisonville. Maybe.
I think this is where you buy guns in Poisonville. Maybe.

And while it's unspecified if this new label will only be a browser-based MMOG front for the magazine, Playboy is willing to divulge that "more high quality, development partnerships [will be announced] in the coming months."

You can view a trailer for Poisonville just below. It's an MMOG that drops you in a battered metropolis, riddled with the taint of gangs and violence. You'll be asked to be a nice guy and do missions in "order to counteract corruption," gain respect, and "rebuild" reputations. Driving is confirmed, as well as PVP and gang warfare. Also, huge explosions and "Playboy-caliber women."

The game is supposedly in open beta, and I suppose you could access said beta through Playboy's website, a page that also currently offers live nude chats and all sorts of NSFW stuff.  Knock yourself out.

So you shoot people and have sex?
EveretteScotton Aug. 26, 2010 at 9:03 a.m.
So kind of like APB, but with bewbs?
Jimion Aug. 26, 2010 at 9:03 a.m.
This game is going to suck, I'm calling it.
Drunkenon Aug. 26, 2010 at 9:04 a.m.

Manhattan_Projecton Aug. 26, 2010 at 9:05 a.m.
Can't wait for this.
Vorbison Aug. 26, 2010 at 9:06 a.m.
I don't like where this is going.
AZChristopheron Aug. 26, 2010 at 9:06 a.m.
Playboy being part of a crappy GTA clone. Not exactly what we should be hoping for.
zityzon Aug. 26, 2010 at 9:06 a.m.

Well, looks more interesting sadly than APB...

I always kinda looked down on Playboy as just being a sleazy magazine.. that is, until I read some of the interviews they conducted, the most important one to me being the last big one with John Lennon. Reading that, I realized they were mostly interested in things that interest young men, and naked women just happens to be right at the top of that list. In that context, I'm surprised they took so long entering the video game space, and I hope someone there realizes how bad BMX XXX and even Playboy Mansion were. You need more than sex to build a fun game.
gakonon Aug. 26, 2010 at 9:07 a.m.
Playboy readers, they have "needs" according to Playboy PR.

Manhattan_Projecton Aug. 26, 2010 at 9:11 a.m.
Has anyone figured out how to get in the beta?

And yes, I am kinda interested in what this game will be.

What an awful name to accompany a likely awful game.
XcLon Aug. 26, 2010 at 9:12 a.m.
So ,, hustlers going to make Saint's row 4 ??
xMP44xon Aug. 26, 2010 at 9:15 a.m.
I think it looks utterly terrible, sadly. I was surprised by the concept and then immediately let down by the trailer. Playboy Mansion actually looks like it could have been a better game, and from those graphics it looks like an early PS2 game.
DjTann3ron Aug. 26, 2010 at 9:15 a.m.
bewbs!

I'm interested as well. But of course this could totally flop
